For several years, Meta (the parent company of Facebook) and Apple have been vying for dominance in the smart glasses market, aiming to lead the way in virtual and augmented reality technology. Now, another competitor seems poised to join the fray. Google, working with hardware developer Xreal, has unveiled a new pair of extended reality glasses called Project Aura, which will operate on Android XR software developed by Google.
At the Google I/O conference, I learned that Project Aura is set to be unveiled, as reported by CNBC. Excitingly, Android XR will provide access to this project for the vast Android community and enable these glasses to function seamlessly with the Gemini AI assistant. As of now, specifications about Project Aura are scarce, but it’s known that it will be powered by Android XR and incorporate Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR chip.
Project Aura is anticipated to operate in conjunction with another device, likely a compatible smartphone, for functionality. Further specifics are yet to be disclosed, but having to connect to another device seems like a possible setback for Xreal, given their previous achievements at events such as this year’s CES. Xreal made waves at CES with their One Pro AR glasses, which boast a wireless setup and provide a virtual 171-inch display at a swift 120Hz refresh rate, an accomplishment that earned it a spot on the Shacknews Best of CES 2025 list.
Further insights regarding Project Aura are anticipated at this year’s Augmented World Expo happening in Long Beach, California from June 10th to 12th. In the meantime, explore the initial details of Project Aura on the Xreal website.
