As a long-time Xbox enthusiast with countless hours spent on the platform, it’s disheartening to see yet another wave of layoffs at Microsoft Gaming. With over 2,000 jobs cut this year alone, it seems like the gaming industry is facing a storm in 2024.
As a devoted fan, I’m sharing the news that Microsoft is once again reducing its workforce in the gaming division. This time around, approximately 650 positions are being eliminated, with the majority of these employees coming from the corporate and support departments.
As a devoted fan, I’m sharing the news that Phil Spencer, Xbox’s head honcho, announced job cuts in an internal memo, which IGN got their hands on. In his own words, he said, “To streamline our post-acquisition team setup and optimize our business operations, we’re sadly letting go of about 650 team members across Microsoft Gaming.” The purpose behind this tough move, he added, is to reorganize the company for long-term prosperity.
Speaking as a devoted fan, I’d like to share that Spencer reassures us about no upcoming game cancellations or studio closures due to the recent layoffs. Contrasting with the past, where Xbox shut down Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks (subsidiaries of Bethesda) in May, leading to layoffs, it’s worth noting that Tango Gameworks was later revived following its acquisition by the publishers of PUBG, Krafton.
Following the dismissal of approximately 1,900 employees from Microsoft’s gaming sector earlier this year in January, the company has now exceeded 2,000 layoffs for 2024. Unfortunately, job cuts remain a recurring theme within the gaming industry this year.
