This shift in strategy raises a question: Could it be that the console wars have come to an end? Regardless of whether they have or not, Microsoft is still manufacturing consoles, as well as other devices.
There will be Xbox consoles and “other devices” in the future
In a chat with Rolling Stone magazine, Xbox’s head honcho, Phil Spencer, shared insights on Xbox’s upcoming plans, coinciding with their latest ad campaign titled “This Is an Xbox.” The phrase suggests gamers can play Xbox games flexibly, anytime and anywhere, thanks to the variety of devices such as consoles, smart TVs, phones, and more. With the focus shifting towards convenience through cloud streaming and subscriptions like Game Pass, there’s speculation about whether they might phase out consoles altogether. However, Spencer clarified that this is not their current plan.
“We’ll definitely do more consoles in the future, and other devices,” says Spencer.
It’s likely that the “other devices” referred to also encompass the recently verified Xbox handheld. As stated in a recent interview with Bloomberg, Spencer mentioned that Microsoft is experimenting with prototypes, yet they are still a considerable distance away from launching this type of product at present.
While Xbox continues to market its hardware, it’s not the sector driving its expansion. Instead, Phil Spencer emphasizes the importance of PC, cloud streaming, and game accessibility for the company’s growth.
He mentioned that the most significant growth for Xbox players is happening on PC and cloud platforms. It appears that the overall console market isn’t expanding, but we value our console users. To keep growing Xbox, however, our focus should be on PC, on cloud services, and making our games accessible in various locations.
Sony has unveiled the PS5 Pro, an upgraded version of their current console, boasting several enhancements over its standard counterpart. However, Microsoft appears less inclined towards mid-generation updates, with Phil Spencer suggesting they won’t focus on minor hardware improvements.
He mentioned that we’re focusing on hardware that can offer exclusive value to our users, whether they are players or content creators. It’s not about producing additional hardware just for our gain. Is a new device capable of offering a distinctive screen experience? It’s no longer as straightforward as upgrading from the original Xbox to 360, where you moved from standard definition to high definition. Nowadays, it’s more challenging to demonstrate the advantages.
