Xbox backs down from The Outer Worlds 2’s egregious $80 price tag with surprise reduction after fan complaints

As an enthusiastic fan, I’m thrilled about Obsidian Entertainment’s highly-anticipated The Outer Worlds 2! Initially, there was a bit of a stir among us when it was announced that the game would retail at $80 upon release, making it one of the first Xbox titles to do so. However, I’m pleased to say that this price point will no longer be the case, bringing a sense of relief and joy to many of us in the gaming community.

In response to the intense backlash, further intensified by Microsoft’s unfortunate layoffs not long after, Obsidian Entertainment has decided to lower the price of their upcoming RPG to $70 at release, representing a 12.5% reduction from the original launch day retail cost.

The Outer Worlds 2 will no longer launch at $80

After the recent uproar, Brandon Adler, the director of The Outer Worlds 2, clarified to the audience that it’s actually Microsoft’s executives who determine the pricing for Obsidian’s games, not the team itself. This revelation seemed to irritate fans, as they felt it was handled inappropriately.

In a message to fans on social media, Obsidian Entertainment shared exciting news: “We’ve heard your concerns about the pricing of The Outer Worlds 2 through your drone messages. As an organization committed to preventing corporations from acting without restraint, we at the Earth Directorate have collaborated with [REDACTED] to adjust the price of The Outer Worlds 2.”

Earlier, Xbox stated that the $80 cost for Obsidian’s RPG was decided after considering market trends and escalating production costs. Yet, it appears that Microsoft’s move towards this pricing tier was more than the average gamer was willing to pay.

Xbox’s decision to sell The Outer Worlds 2 for $70 echoes the approach taken by Gearbox Software with Borderlands 4. Previously, CEO Randy Pitchford had revealed that the game would initially cost $80, but after a massive outcry from fans on the internet, he adjusted the price of the RPG to $70.

The sequel to The Outer Worlds, titled The Outer Worlds 2, will be launched for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC on October 29, 2025. On the same day, it will also be accessible through Xbox Game Pass. This serves as a hint to big-name game studios that players prefer not to spend $80 initially for playing a newly released game (a point worth noting, GTA 6 developers).
