Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther, has disclosed who will be in charge of Marvel Studios’ forthcoming X-Men remake.
Who is directing the X-Men MCU movie?
Ryan Coogler is deeply familiar with the inner workings at Marvel Studios, having directed two films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Black Panther (released in 2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (set for release in 2022), and serving as an executive producer on two upcoming Disney+ series – Ironheart and Eyes of Wakanda, slated for release in 2025.
Fans have been urging Ryan Coogler to take on the job of directing the forthcoming X-Men reboot, hinted at back in 2019 by Marvel. But while promoting Ironheart, Coogler has revealed who will be taking up the director’s position for the first MCU-based X-Men film.
A video emerged online showing Ryan Coogler being questioned about taking the helm for X-Men. However, he swiftly dismissed the idea, stating, “No, no, it’s Jake who is directing that.” When pressed to confirm if he was referring to Jake Schreier, Coogler affirmed, “Yes.

It was first reported in May that Schreier might be involved with the X-Men project, with Deadline suggesting he was Marvel’s preferred candidate for the job. Although discussions about his directing the reboot were only recent last month, Variety’s latest report mentioning Marvel adding a fourth movie to its 2028 release schedule hinted more at Schreier helming X-Men as a certainty rather than an option. Now, Coogler has confirmed that indeed, Schreier – who directed Thunderbolts previously – will take the director’s chair for Marvel Studios’ X-Men production.
*Note: “Thunderbolts” is the title of a Marvel Comics team and potentially the movie as well.
The live-action reboot of the X-Men, following the storyline again, is not scheduled for release until after the final chapter of The Multiverse Saga has been completed. So far, the sequel to The Infinity Saga has seen many original actors from the X-Men franchise of 20th Century Fox return to play memorable roles in various blockbuster films, such as Doctor Strange and several other projects like The Marvels.
Most of these actors are set to feature in “Avengers: Doomsday,” but they won’t be playing their primary Marvel Cinematic Universe characters as originally depicted. Instead, it’s speculated that fresh faces will take on those roles after “Avengers: Secret Wars.” One name being tossed around for the X-Men reboot is Jack Champion, who has openly expressed his enthusiasm for playing Cyclops if given the chance.
At the time of writing, Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot remains without a release date.
