X-Men ‘97’s Beau DeMayo Claims Marvel Deleted Storm’s Iconic Scene

The X-Men ’97 series attracted a great deal of acclaim but also stirred up debates after its original creator, Beau DeMayo, was dismissed from the show. A seasoned writer has recently shared another surprising tale about the production, claiming that one of the co-executive producers interfered with Storm’s storyline in Episode 4. According to DeMayo, the X-Men ’97 episode titled “Motendo/Lifedeath – Part 1,” originally intended to delve deeper into Storm and Forge’s relationship than what ultimately appeared on screen.

According to the author of The Witcher, a co-executive producer from X-Men ’97 who remained unnamed provided the fourth episode of the series to an editor on What If…?, prompting them to implement substantial alterations in its structure.

Beau DeMayo voiced out on X (previously known as Twitter) that he encountered difficulties during the production of the series’ fourth episode. He disclosed that the producer of X-Men ’97 allegedly seized control of the episode, handing it over to an editor at #WhatIf for a redo, which unfortunately eliminated approximately one-third of Storm’s storyline and split Episode 4 into two distinct parts.

DeMayo expressed his intention to initiate Episode 4 by replicating a comics page where Forge was taking care of Storm. However, the editor of What If…? eventually chose to exclude this scene. When protesting against the change in X-Men ’97, Beau DeMayo stated that he received the standard “stop acting like a comic book collector” response from them.

Beau DeMayo also mentioned that he reached out to Gil Birmingham to play Forge in the animated series. At first, the Yellowstone actor was hesitant due to a similar experience with a previous Marvel Cinematic Universe project where his character was dropped without prior notice. However, DeMayo successfully persuaded him for the role, but Marvel Studios later made the same decision regarding Birmingham’s character. Consequently, it is uncertain if Birmingham will return to reprise his role in Season 2.

Following his role as showrunner for X-Men ’97 Season 1, DeMayo transitioned to scriptwriting for Season 2. However, Marvel Studios terminated his employment shortly thereafter due to conduct issues, which included allegations of sexual misconduct. Beau DeMayo immediately refuted these claims and has since begun sharing anecdotes from the production of the acclaimed series.
