X-Men ’97 Creator Slams Marvel for Re-Hiring Thunderbolts* Director After Flop

In simpler terms, the creator of X-Men ’97 and former screenwriter Beau DeMayo expressed disappointment over Marvel’s decision regarding the director of the X-Men reboot, describing it as “unimpressive”. This statement was made following the announcement that Jake Schreier, who is currently directing Thunderbolts, will be in charge of the X-Men projects at Marvel Studios.

Beau DeMayo expressed his opinions about Marvel assigning Schreier to oversee the X-Men reboot on a platform that was once Twitter. He likened Marvel Studios to a “plantation-style club” and referred to Schreier as a “rising filmmaker who often experiences failure but still advances in his career.

DeMayo wrote, “Wow, it’s only at Marvel Studios with its exclusive, country club-like atmosphere where you can make a good film that doesn’t recoup costs and still get this job.” He added, “It’s amazing how, in Hollywood, conforming to a specific demographic and repeatedly failing upward can lead to success.

The following passage continues, “I couldn’t care less about their ideas. It’s disappointing to learn that we’ll be receiving an inauthentic interpretation of the X-Men by Iger, with no genuine delving into the central themes of #xmen. Frankly, this decision is downright pitiful.

As a gamer speaking, I’ve been behind the helm for some unforgettable productions before Thunderbolts. In 2012, I directed Robot & Frank, a captivating blend of science fiction, comedy, and drama. Following that, in 2015, I brought Paper Towns to life – a heartfelt romantic comedy drama movie. Additionally, I’ve had the pleasure of directing several episodes for Showtime’s Kidding and Netflix’s Beef.

Thunderbolts, however, stands out – it boasted an impressive production budget of $180 million (according to The Hollywood Reporter) and raked in approximately $381 million at the global box office.

In March 2024, Marvel Studios dismissed DeMayo from X-Men ’97 before its debut on Disney+, following the completion of the second season’s scripting. Later in July, Matthew Chauncey, a screenwriter for What If…?, took charge of Season 3, writing and executive producing it. Additionally, sources claim that Marvel assigned him to revise Season 2 as well.
