X-Men ’97 Creator Criticizes MCU’s Namor & Human Torch Ahead of Fantastic Four Movie

The creator of X-Men ’97, Beau DeMayo, voices some concerns regarding the way Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) portrays Namor and Johnny Storm.

In a natural and easy to read way: DeMayo developed the initial season of Disney+ and Marvel’s X-Men ’97 series, which made its debut in March 2024. At least two additional seasons are being produced at present; however, DeMayo was dismissed as the show’s lead writer roughly when the first season aired.

What did X-Men ’97’s Beau DeMayo say about Namor and Johnny Storm?

In reference to X, DeMayo posted a remark revealing that Joseph Quinn, known for portraying Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, discussed with Entertainment Weekly how his character will deviate from Chris Evans’ Human Torch in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Quinn commented, ‘Once seen as a carefree ladies’ man, isn’t that charm outdated nowadays? I doubt it. However, the new Johnny appears to be more considerate towards others’ feelings.’

DeMayo said, “They pulled this softening sh— with Namor too.”

In response to several commenters, DeMayo stated, “[Namor] appeared more like a distressed child having a tantrum against a black nation, rather than a king.

Concerning Johnny Storm, DeMayo expressed his disapproval of Marvel’s contemporary character transformations, labeling them as “attempts to appear progressive or socially conscious.” In another statement, he suggested that Marvel no longer engages in storytelling because writers are reluctant to work with a company where they are told, “Kevin is the star and the face of the work, but working here can boost your career prospects later on.

In American theaters on July 25, 2025, Marvel Studios will debut their movie “Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Alongside Quinn, this film features Pedro Pascal portraying Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach stepping into the role of Ben Grimm/The Thing.

Just heard some exciting news as a gaming enthusiast! It turns out Tenoch Huerta Mejía is set to return as Namor in the upcoming Avengers movie, “Doomsday,” slated for release in 2026. Can’t wait to see what he brings to the table!
