WWE Star Says Welcoming CM Punk Back Was a Dishonor

As a devoted wrestling fan who has witnessed CM Punk‘s rollercoaster journey through the years, I must say that his comeback to WWE has been nothing short of exhilarating. The tension between him and Dominik Mysterio at their first encounter was palpable, much like the electricity in the air during one of those iconic Punk promos.

Last year, CM Punk came back to the WWE following almost a decade of absence from the company. Despite his wrestling comeback happening in 2021 after a seven-year break, his tenure with AEW was marred by offstage conflicts with the executive vice presidents, The Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega.

As a fervent fan, I can’t help but recall the electrifying confrontations that Punk had with The Elite at All Out in 2022 and Jack Perry at All In 2023, incidents that certainly stirred quite a buzz. After the backstage altercation with Perry, AEW made the surprising decision to part ways with Punk. Meanwhile, WWE programming began subtly hinting and speculating about his comeback. The wait was finally over on November 25, 2023, as Punk made his highly anticipated return to WWE at Survivor Series: WarGames.

WarGames, sparked a strong reaction from Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre. Simultaneously, another prominent figure in the WWE, Dominik Mysterio, admitted that he felt it was an insult to welcome Punk back into the WWE.

At a show held after Christmas at Madison Square Garden, Mysterio and Punk squared off – this was Punk’s return to WWE action after almost a decade. Now, Dirty Dom, reflecting on their initial bout, has expressed interest in facing Punk once more.

Dominik Mysterio says he would challenge CM Punk again

During an interview with No Contest Wrestling, Dominik Mysterio expressed his feelings about being CM Punk’s debut opponent in the past. He referred to the encounter as a “disrespect,” pointing out that Punk seemed overweight at the time.

In simpler terms, Mysterio mentioned, “I regrettably welcomed Punk back after a decade-long absence. As anticipated, it turned out much as I expected – an elderly man attempting to perform, believing he’s still got the skills. You probably witnessed the match yourself; he appeared on stage in plain black underwear without his usual gear, making for quite a spectacle.

He added, “In essence, it was gratifying that the company put faith in me to land the initial blows against CM Punk, serving as a warm welcome. The vibe within that ring was truly extraordinary and unique.

Apart from that, he brought up an old memory too – when Punk performed Happy Birthday to Aalyah Gutierrez during the well-known 2009 WWE SmackDown episode. Now, Dominik expressed his eagerness for another faceoff, saying, “I’d really enjoy a chance to tangle with him once more, you understand. With my newfound readiness and preparation. I’ve got a better grasp of his abilities now. So, it’s nothing extraordinary; he just does the same tricks again and again. I believe I can predict his strategies, or to put it another way, I’m familiar with his repertoire.

During the post-Christmas showdown, CM Punk and Dominik Mysterio clashed twice, but it was CM Punk, the ex-WWE Champion, who came out on top in both bouts. Now, Mysterio is gearing up for a re-match, hoping to turn the tables and secure a victory when they meet again.
