Wuthering Waves dev quickly snapped up by Tencent just before massive 2.0 launch

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experiences under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension upon hearing about Tencent’s increased stake in Wuthering Waves developer Kuro Games. Having witnessed the rise and fall of numerous games due to corporate decisions, I’ve learned to approach such news with a grain of salt.

In simple terms, the global gaming powerhouse Tencent has swiftly obtained majority ownership in Kuro Games, the studio behind Wuthering Waves. As the game’s version 2.0 launch and PS5 port approach, Tencent intends to secure a substantial portion of the upcoming revenue share.

Tencent grabs controlling stake of Wuthering Waves

According to Chinese news source Youxiputao, Tencent previously held 13.4% of Kuro Games, the developers behind Wuthering Waves. Yet, the publishing company swiftly bought a 37% stake from Hero Entertainment, now giving them a controlling 51.4% ownership over the studio.

Through a trusted insider at Kuro Games, Youxiputao, it was revealed that Tencent intends to maintain Kuro’s current operational structure. In line with its approach towards companies like Riot Games, Supercell, and others, Tencent prefers not to intervene in the development process of Wuthering Waves.

An internal memo, which was leaked, conveyed to Kuro Games employees that the changes in ownership wouldn’t disrupt their autonomous workings. Rather, this transition of shareholders is expected to establish a more secure and consistent external business climate.

Despite not reaching the colossal success of Genshin Impact or Zenless Zone Zero, Wuthering Waves has generated a substantial amount of revenue for Kuro Games. With version 2.0 imminently releasing to revamp the game’s top team compositions and introduce an array of new features to its open-world gacha adventure, investor interest in the game is at an all-time high, surpassing even player enthusiasm.

In contrast to a decline in gacha revenue for WuWu and other prominent games like Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail in 2024, the video game industry remains a lucrative sector. Kuro Games’ successful gacha title is set to debut on PlayStation 5, potentially tapping into a vast, untouched player base. It seems Tencent anticipates significant success from this move.
