In a significant milestone, the game “Wuchang: Fallen Feathers” has debuted with over 114,000 simultaneous players on Steam, positioning it as one of the most successful initial releases for a Souls-like game that isn’t developed by FromSoftware.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, it’s mind-blowing to see that my favorite game right now has broken the Steam record with over 114,000 players in the last 24 hours! That’s a massive crowd, surpassing even the concurrent player count of heavyweights like Lies of P (around 30,000), Lords of the Fallen (43,075), and The First Berserker: Khazan (nearly 33,000). It’s a testament to the game’s popularity and the fun we’re all having!
When evaluating the success of a game, concurrent players is a useful initial benchmark, although it’s important to remember that there are other significant factors as well. Unfortunately, it does not take into account players using the game on other platforms.
Initially, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers received an overwhelming number of negative user reviews on Steam due to poor performance, a dull main character, clunky combat, and unresponsive gameplay upon its launch. However, over time, the negative feedback has lessened slightly, now categorized as ‘mostly negative’. As of writing, only 21% of the 6,500+ reviews on Steam are positive.
Initially, I hoped the game would be great given my anticipation. However, despite the mostly negative reviews I’d read, I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, I encountered significant technical problems that hindered my ability to fully enjoy the combat and gameplay. Despite my efforts to push through these issues, I was unable to experience much of the combat beyond the opening tutorial boss fight and a few skirmishes with enemy camps. A promising moment during a boss fight left me enjoying the experience, but the performance problems persisted, preventing me from experiencing more fun moments.
The user noted that UE5 games can be either great or poor in terms of performance, and unfortunately, in this instance, it falls into the latter category (apparently not for their system). They suggest that a free trial version of the game would be beneficial under such circumstances.
Despite some negative feedback, it’s worth noting that the game runs smoothly on my system. No crashes, no lag, no slowdown during combat. This reviewer seems to be one of the lucky ones. It’s becoming increasingly clear that Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is being unjustly criticized by players with poor PCs and limited optimization skills.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers – A Souls-inspired action role-playing game set in the troubled era of late Ming Dynasty China. You assume the role of a shadowy figure cursed with a grotesque feather sickness, who unearths hidden truths and confronts supernatural adversaries within an ancient empire on the brink of ruin.
“Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is yet another great Soulslike to add to the ever-increasing pile, featuring excellent combat, wonderful level design, an incredible skill tree, and fearsome bosses,” iggn.ru wrote in our Wuchang: Fallen Feathers review, which returned an 8/10 score. “Just watch out for some steep difficulty dips and spikes, and a reliance on cheap-feeling ‘gotcha!’ ambushes.”
On July 24, 2025, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers was officially launched on PS5, Xbox Series, and both Steam and the Epic Games Store for PC. To sweeten the deal, Microsoft added it to their Game Pass library on the same day, making it accessible to subscribers of the Ultimate tier.
