Wonder Woman Game Canceled & Studio Closed, WB Vows To ‘Get Swagger Back’

On an unexpected decision on Tuesday, Warner Bros. Games disclosed that they would be shutting down three of their studios, among them being Monolith Productions. Regrettably, this decision also includes the cancellation of the eagerly anticipated Wonder Woman game that was being developed by the same studio.

Besides Monolith Productions, WB Games simultaneously disclosed that they would be shutting down Player First Games (responsible for creating MultiVersus) and WB Games San Diego, a studio that had been developing an unnamed AAA title prior to its closing.

Both Monolith Productions and WB Games announced the closure of two studios – Player First Games (creators of MultiVersus) and WB Games San Diego (working on an unrevealed AAA game).

The hit video game developer Monolith Productions was responsible for creating “Wonder Woman,” a game that’s also known for producing popular titles such as “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor,” “Middle-earth: Shadow of War,” and the initial installments in the horror FPS series, F.E.A.R. Despite limited information about the game, it was rumored to employ similar technology as the “Nemesis” system used in Middle-earth games.

What did WB say about the cancellation and closing?

Although Warner Bros. Games did not announce it openly, an email from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games, JB Perrette, obtained by Polygon confirmed that some closures are indeed happening. He mentioned a less-than-satisfactory 2024 forecast as the reason, with a renewed emphasis on Warner Bros.’s key intellectual properties such as Harry Potter, DC Comics, and Game of Thrones being the primary drivers for this change.

In his message, Perrette expressed that our primary focus should be improving for the sake of our fans, but also to restore our reputation which is essential for attracting more investment in future games. He emphasized that regaining our swagger and financial credibility will take time, with each high-quality game release contributing to the former, and each quarter of sound fiscal performance contributing to the latter. Essentially, we must fulfill our promises and avoid any major unexpected setbacks.

Regarding the Wonder Woman video game, as it’s associated with DC Comics, Perrette stated that this project didn’t align with our strategic objectives. Instead, they are considering redirecting our staff resources, aiming to utilize their skills elsewhere if possible.

In her letter, Perrette stated that Warner Bros. Games plans to concentrate on developing “a smaller number of larger franchises,” with a particular emphasis on Batman series within the DC universe as James Gunn constructs the new DC Universe.
