The remake of the “Wolf Man” movie earned over $1 million during its preview screenings on Thursday, competing with the comedy film “One of Them Days,” starring Keke Palmer and SZA.
In a modern retelling of the 1941 horror film The Wolf Man, titled Wolf Man, is helmed by director Leigh Whannell, renowned for movies like Upgrade, The Invisible Man, and Insidious Chapter 3. The story unfolds as a family led by Blake (Christopher Abbott) moves from San Francisco to Oregon following the inheritance of his childhood home. However, their peaceful life takes a chilling twist when Blake is attacked and wounded by a werewolf. As he starts transforming into a potentially dangerous creature, both his wife and daughter find themselves in grave danger.
What were the totals for the Wolf Man Thursday previews?
In a projection by Variety, the new Universal and Blumhouse film has raked in $1.4 million during Thursday previews and anticipates earning between $17 million and $21 million during its debut weekend. This fresh release is currently competing against One of Them Days, which brought in $1.3 million.
The movie, rated R due to its intense violent scenes and disturbing visuals, is Universal’s newest endeavor to adapt their iconic monsters for the cinema, building upon Whannell’s successful revamp of The Invisible Man. The main cast includes Christopher Abbott (Sanctuary) portraying Blake Lovell, Julia Garner (Apartment 7A) as Charlotte, Matilda Firth (Hullraisers) in the role of Ginger, Sam Jaeger (Devil in Ohio) as Grady, Benedict Hardie (Upgrade) as Derek, and Milo Cawthorne (Blood Punch) in the character of Man.
This rated-R movie is Universal’s new try at reviving their famous monsters on the big screen, based on the success of Whannell’s The Invisible Man remake. It features Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, Matilda Firth, Sam Jaeger, Benedict Hardie, and Milo Cawthorne in key roles.
Over the last few years, the character has undergone multiple adaptations, such as Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), House of the Wolf Man (2009), and The Wolfman from 2010, which was not well-received by critics featuring Benicio del Toro and Emily Blunt.
Despite the split opinions that surrounded its debut (currently holding a 55% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes), I found myself utterly captivated by this latest reboot. In my humble opinion, it stands out as one of Blumhouse’s finest productions in years, demonstrating cinematic brilliance that resonates deeply.
Wolf Man is still in theaters.
