Occasionally, I stumble upon a cinematic gem so flawless, so pristine, that it demands a second look, a closer examination.
Initially, it seems ordinary that someone acting outrageously to criticize former President Trump is nothing new. However, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde’s humiliating sermon at the National Cathedral took it to another level, reaching an unprecedented level of awkwardness. Unsurprisingly, mainstream media outlets, which tend to lean toward progressive views, find this appealing, although for varying reasons.
Among the many significant executive orders that President Trump has successfully implemented, it’s worth pausing to appreciate this particular order which carries only symbolic value.
Bishopess of the Woke Church
The unique aspect of this situation is a woman portraying a bishop, even donning the miter and crozier. Traditionally, these ecclesiastical attire were designed for men. However, when I encounter a woman adorned in such vestments, it’s hard not to chuckle. Given the Church of England’s rich history and liturgy steeped in the English language, one might expect a keen grasp of gender nuances. For centuries, the Anglican Communion mirrored the Catholic Church in its teachings and rituals so closely that it was often referred to as a lighter version – salvation with about a third less guilt.
Regrettably, there’s a striking resemblance to Disney’s modern approach that the leadership seemed to adopt when referring to their church: “Let’s introduce female members and make it inclusive towards LGBTQ+ individuals.”
In case you haven’t been following, around 85% of the worldwide Anglican Communion has split from the Church of England, essentially disfellowshipping the Archbishop of Canterbury. This action led to his resignation, as it was exposed that he was aware of physical and sexual abuse of minors within the church but chose not to intervene.
Apparently, many Anglicans have found issue with activist homosexuals disrupting their religious rituals and disrespecting their sacred spaces. The Episcopal Church, being its U.S.-based branch, has often aligned itself with these controversial figures. So, if someone wonders why someone might exploit a significant national occasion for personal gain and social media attention, it’s important to know that this behavior is not new; it’s a pattern that has been recurring for quite some time among such individuals.

So Stunning! So Brave!
Bishopess Budde is often portrayed as a powerful female leader, or girlboss, in popular culture. However, she hasn’t taken any significant risks in her work. Instead, she’s been praised by the media and likely received generous donations for her ministry. This is characteristic of modern society’s perceived left-wing, which some argue has strayed from its roots.
A century ago, groups like Antifa were made up of physically confrontational individuals who engaged in full-scale physical battles with their opponents. They weren’t gentle young men carrying plastic shields under the watchful eyes of lenient prosecutors. Instead, they were tough, roughneck men dressed in worn denim, sleeping on the ground, drinking strong coffee, and carrying military-grade rifles into life-threatening battles during the sweltering heat of 1930s Spain.
In contrast to previous iterations, the updated version of Antifa enjoys unparalleled peace and security, seldom contemplating the sound of gunfire echoing through the trees above or even fretting over a potential authority figure’s disapproval, which could lead to being shot from behind should they step out of bounds.
It’s interesting to note that the epitome of so-called bravery today seems to be a wealthy individual shooting an unarmed person from behind, or a well-off woman dressed in a religious garb mocking her audience during an event intended for national harmony and solidarity.
The grand display of presidential pardons by the Biden administration highlights an unfortunate truth: They aim to appear firm, yet consistently avoid experiencing the repercussions of their decisions. It’s truly regrettable.
The Theology of Wokeness
In simpler terms, we don’t require the “They Live” mentality to understand the situation here. It seems clear that any remnants of traditional Christian values in the old Episcopal Church have been replaced by the controversial ideas of wokeness. On one perspective, Bishop Budde is just a more elevated form of a sign-carrying Calvinist, offering grace at its most affordable. In this instance, her sermon served as her yard sign, showing her moral superiority over the Trump Administration merely by repeating platitudes.
Just as displaying signs indicating one’s beliefs on your property doesn’t fundamentally alter anything (such as providing food or clothing, or leading individuals to Jesus), it remains that modern expressions of Christianity, often referred to as “Woke Christianity,” are essentially symbols of self-proclaimed moral righteousness rather than calls for repentance or salvation. Instead, they serve as a means to assert personal virtue and imply the depravity and unworthiness of others, labeling them as “deplorable.
Utter Depravity implies that the group often referred to as ‘Deplorables’ are incapable of doing anything good or admirable. This is why those who advocate for social justice, or ‘Wokes‘, seldom acknowledge their achievements, even when their policies succeed or they exhibit acts of heroism. For instance, during the incident where rumors swirled about President Trump being shot, many in this group refused to accept that he had been harmed, even going so far as to speculate (falsely) that he might have only been injured by a bullet splinter. This stretch of logic is only possible for someone who holds beliefs at odds with reality. If you subscribe to the belief system I’ve termed ‘Yard Sign Calvinism’, however, this behavior becomes understandable. The adherents of this belief system cannot be physically courageous and are incapable of performing virtuous acts.
In a nutshell, the Elect consider whatever they do to be automatically virtuous because they view themselves as inherently good. This leads to a significant inconsistency, where outcomes are disregarded in their moral judgement and only the identity of the actor matters. Essentially, they deem actions like uncontrolled immigration or poor wildfire management acceptable, not because of the results, but because of who is performing these actions. The crux of the issue lies not with the problems themselves, but rather with those attempting to address them.
Additionally connected is the old belief known as Pelagianism, which proposes that people can achieve salvation independently of God. This idea mirrors the girlboss mentality: the main challenge isn’t self-improvement but rather embracing and acknowledging your inherent greatness to its fullest extent.
This bishop-like figure embodies an unusual interpretation of her faith. She’s not actively rescuing or helping anyone, nor is she putting herself in any peril with her bold stance. The individuals currently admiring her would attend church reluctantly and likely forget her name by the next news update.

Will Hollywood Bend The Knee?
Considering the current situation, it’s intriguing to observe if Trump’s proposed “Ambassadors to Hollywood” will receive a courteous reception.
The purpose of the title remains vague, though it claims to rejuvenate the American film industry. As for the appointees, each carries a significant reputation. Sylvester Stallone is renowned as one of the leading action stars, yet his contributions extend beyond that sphere. Unlike Arnold Schwarzenegger, Stallone isn’t just a line repeater; he creates stories and infuses them with potent (and masculine) American themes. Mel Gibson is a long-standing conservative figure who openly displays his Catholic faith. Jon Voight, an intriguing selection, represents an older generation and has transitioned from films like “Midnight Cowboy” and the anti-war “Coming Home” with Jane Fonda, to becoming a deeply spiritual man who primarily communicates in religious terms.
Initially, the response has been subdued, which is unexpected. I would have anticipated a more vigorous reaction, like the famous “THIS IS SPARTA!” response, but it seems that’s not happening this time around.
It’s not hard to imagine Hollywood, currently facing significant financial difficulties and hit by devastating wildfires that damaged many celebrity homes, abandoning their perceived moral high ground for a more practical strategy, given their history of transactional ethics.
Put simply, it seems that the time for Yard Sign Calvinism and Playing-Bishop-as-a-Hobby women might be coming to an end. Here’s to hoping for a change.
