Approximately three decades after ending its four-season broadcast, it appears a film adaptation of the popular series “Wiseguy” is now in development by producers Sophie Cassidy and Jeff Katz, known for their work on the horror movie “The Pope’s Exorcist” featuring Russell Crowe. The upcoming project will draw inspiration from the highly-rated CBS mystery crime drama TV show that aired from 1987 to 1990.
The initial show featured Ken Wahl portraying Vinnie Terranova, a character first presented as a federal agent working for the Organized Crime Bureau. In this role, Wahl’s character infiltrated an Italian crime syndicate posing as a mob enforcer, taking down various dangerous criminals and navigating vibrant underworlds. For his outstanding performance, he received a Golden Globe Award in 1990 for Best Actor.
Will Jonathan Banks return in the Wiseguy movie?
Right now, Wahl isn’t involved with the movie adaptation. On the other hand, Jonathan Banks is said to be coming back to reprise his character as Frank McPike, a role he initially played as an FBI senior agent on the show. Banks received acclaim for his portrayal and was even nominated for an Emmy Award in 1989 for Best Supporting Actor. Following Wiseguy, Banks achieved worldwide fame for his memorable role in the hit series Breaking Bad.
In this new movie titled “Wiseguy,” it’s anticipated to continue the storyline within the same universe as the original TV series. The narrative focuses on a fresh character in his late twenties or early thirties, who bears a resemblance to James Bond but is rooted in blue-collar life. The production of this film will be handled by Cassidy and Matt Crespy from 2.0 Entertainment, Katz for Worldwide Katz, as well as Tawnia McKiernan for Stephen J. Cannell Productions.
