In May, we shared news that George R.R. Martin had penned approximately 1,100 pages for The Winds of Winter – the same amount he stated he finished the previous year. Despite initially predicting in 2011 that the book would be completed within three years, it refuses to be fully written more than a decade on. Martin himself admits the progress is slow, but maintains he’s still working diligently on it. However, with each new announcement, it grows increasingly challenging to accept that this long-awaited sixth book in A Song of Ice and Fire series will ever see the light of day.
The Winds Of Whatever: George R. R. Martin’s Latest Project Signals What Fans Feared
In this updated version, Martin has joined the team as a producer for A Dozen Tough Jobs, an animated take on Howard Waldrop’s novella. Set in 1920s Mississippi, it reimagines the twelve labors of Hercules, with the script penned by Bubba Ho-Tep author Joe R. Lansdale and animation by the Blue Eye Samurai studio. This unique blend of genres seems to perfectly align with Martin’s affinity for Southern Gothic storytelling.
It appears he’s not engrossed in wrapping up a lengthy fantasy book, which he began reading in 2010.
We’ve been through this scenario multiple times before, and at some point, it becomes challenging not to feel like the butt of an ongoing practical joke. With each new Martin project, there arises a glimmer of hope that perhaps this will be the one where The Winds of Winter is finally released. However, every time, our hopes are dashed.
A Decade And A Half Of Waiting
Martin began working on “The Winds of Winter” fifteen years ago, while it’s been thirteen since the publication of “A Dance with Dragons.” During this period, the Game of Thrones TV series emerged, soared to international acclaim, and ultimately ended in a grand finale. Streaming platforms have risen and declined numerous times. The Red Wedding event has become an internet sensation. Yet, no new book from Martin has appeared.
Martin confessed in December that the possibility of completing his novel might not materialize. This isn’t due to lack of desire – he insists he has it – but because the project has grown excessively large and complex. “Regrettably,” he stated, “I am 13 years behind schedule.” He continued, “Every time I say that, I think, ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ It’s just one day at a time.
If that description seems fitting for someone who is tired and confused, then it fits well. He even called “The Winds of Winter” his “curse,” which isn’t an inspiring sentiment from a writer working on concluding one of the grandest fantasy sagas ever penned.
Hollywood Comes Calling
Martin has been involved in both TV and film for some time, but it’s become evident where his creative focus lies these days. He serves as a hands-on producer on various Game of Thrones spinoffs, including House of the Dragon, is jointly directing Dark Winds with Robert Redford, and currently has numerous animated and live-action projects in progress. Interestingly, Dark Winds recently made fun of Martin’s delays in its latest season, showcasing a bit of self-awareness. While it’s endearing to see such self-awareness, it doesn’t bring the manuscript any closer to completion.
momentum, teamwork, and quicker rewards.
Maybe He Shouldn’t Finish It
It might be beneficial to change our perspective on the situation. The belief that George R.R. Martin will indeed complete this book may simply be a dream cherished by fans – another collective delusion we’ve found ourselves immersed in. However, if the creative fire has waned or the storyline grown too complex to disentangle, attempting an ending could potentially cause more damage than good.
From our perspective, we’ve witnessed the repercussions of hastily wrapping up this tale. We don’t require a repeat. To be honest, if Martin seems less passionate about it now, I’d prefer him to focus on what inspires him instead of struggling with something once significant.
Is it possible for someone else to complete it at some point in the future? Absolutely. If certain conditions are met, stranger things might receive a fulfilling conclusion. However, this may or may not happen. Regardless, we’ll still be left with the world he created – the maps, houses, betrayals, and prophecies that led us on an exciting journey. The unfulfilled prophecies were enjoyable while they lasted.
