As a seasoned gamer and advocate for representation in media, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of diverse characters in storytelling. Chanel Stewart’s journey to voice a transgender character in Pixar’s “Win or Lose” was not just a role, but a beacon of hope for many young trans individuals.
Chanel Stewart, a transgender actress appearing in the forthcoming Pixar Disney+ show “Win or Lose“, shared her disappointment over the removal of her character’s narrative from the series.
In a recent conversation with Deadline, Stewart expressed her disappointment upon learning about the decision, since she felt thrilled and eager to make a positive impact on transgender youth.
Stewart expressed disappointment, saying, “Ever since I received the script, I’ve been eager to share my story with the aim of inspiring and supporting other transgender youth. I recognized that our conversation was crucial. Trans narratives are significant, and they merit being shared openly.
2020 saw Stewart come across a post where Pixar was searching for a 14-year-old transgender girl to voice a character in their series. She successfully secured the role and, now at 18, she’s thrilled about not only being part of a Disney project, but also portraying a transgender character.
Wow, what an incredible experience,” Stewart expressed, “I cherished it deeply. I wore it with great honor and pride because it held such significance for me. The idea of accurately representing a transgender teenager resonated greatly within me. I felt elated about the opportunity to create this for transgender youth like myself.
Stewart didn’t elaborate much on the intended message of the storyline, but Disney clarified that her character is now portrayed as a cisgender woman who is straight. However, this change doesn’t diminish her significant role in the show. Despite the alteration in the storyline, Stewart continues to be proud of the role, viewing it as an important part of queer history because she was cast in the first place.
Stewart expressed, “I’m undeniably among the pioneers [in the category of transgender girls] in achieving this!” She continued, “It’s truly an honor to contribute to queer history.
What was removed from Win or Lose?
The TV show chronicles the lives of diverse characters on a mixed middle school softball squad. Each episode focuses on a different character within the show; originally, one of these episodes was intended to feature a transgender narrative. However, Disney has revealed that this particular plotline has been taken out.
In regards to animated content designed for young viewers, we understand that many parents might want to handle sensitive topics at their convenience and according to their child’s readiness,” stated the company.
According to THR’s reports, the character will continue in the show, but any dialogue concerning their gender identity is being eliminated. It was decided several months ago, not recently, and further details about the plot are still unknown, leaving us to wonder what changes have been made to the series.
