In a possible scenario, Willem Dafoe might headline the ensemble in Robert Eggers’ movie version of “A Christmas Carol”. It’s been said that Eggers is penning the script and plans to direct this project for Warner Bros. Notably, Dafoe has collaborated with Eggers on three previous projects: “The Lighthouse” (2019), “The Northman” (2022), and “Nosferatu” (2024).
Robert Eggers to direct A Christmas Carol remake, Willem Dafoe could star
In a possible turn of events, Daniel Day-Lewis might portray the character of Ebenezer Scrooge in director Robert Eggers’ adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless Christmas ghost story, A Christmas Carol. According to sources close to the production, although formal discussions with the cast have yet to begin, Eggers has reportedly been envisioning Scrooge as Day-Lewis during the scriptwriting process. Alongside Eggers, Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus will also produce this project under their Maiden Voyage banner.
Over time, Dafoe and Eggers have built a fruitful professional partnership. In “The Lighthouse,” Willem Dafoe portrayed Thomas Wake, one of the main characters. He also played Heimir the Fool in “The Northman.” Regarding “Nosferatu,” Dafoe took on the role of Prof. Albin Eberhart von Franz, a mysterious philosopher.
Back in December 2024, during an interview with CBR, I shared my thoughts on collaborating with Dafoe. Let me tell you, Willem simply dives in and delivers! Now, he’s undeniably one of the greatest actors out there, but what truly makes him a joy to work with is his ability to immerse himself so seamlessly and naturally into the world we’re creating on set. I can’t think of anything better as a fellow artist.
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, first published in 1843, is one of his most well-known stories. There have been numerous adaptations of this story throughout the years, including live-action films like ‘Scrooge’ (1901), ‘Scrooge’ (1951), ‘Scrooge & Marley’ (2012), and most recently, ‘Spirited’ (2022).
