As a dedicated SWAT fan with a heart full of nostalgia for the LAPD squad, I can’t help but feel the wedding bells ringing in my ears! The prospect of Street and Chris finally tying the knot has me all aflutter.
Is it possible that SWAT’s eighth season might feature a wedding ceremony? There are hints suggesting that two former characters could reappear, with plans to get married!
Fervent viewers of SWAT are familiar with the fact that the cast and crew initially believed season 7 would be the last, but a renewal in April came as a surprise. The series had been terminated in May 2023, but the public’s uproar led CBS to revive the police procedural for a 13-episode final season. However, this was pushed back due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes and eventually premiered in February 2024.
It was evident that the writers were preparing for the conclusion, as significant plotlines unfolded: Luca suffered grave injuries during a shooting and had to leave the LAPD, while Street (Alex Russell) opted to relocate to San Diego to lead a SWAT team there following his leader’s death in a gang shootout.
In the last act of Street’s tale, it was me and Tan bidding each other farewell. Then, I dropped a surprising reveal – inviting the team for an engagement party, me and Chris (Lina Esco). I cautioned Tan, “Hold your words for now, especially from reaching Chris.”
Instead of serving as a fitting farewell for Street, an unexpected renewal for another season of SWAT left fans speculating about the potential for a Street and Chris wedding among the storylines. Fortunately, there’s a chance this could become a reality!
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “I, as a showrunner on SWAT, admittedly didn’t anticipate further exploring Street and Chris’s relationship. However, we threw in that small hint they’re engaged, secretly hoping for the chance to delve deeper into their story, perhaps even showing their wedding.”
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m totally hyped that something might drop this year, and it’s got fans buzzing! Dettman shared some insights, mentioning that, at least for now, there’s no talk of Russell and Esco returning. But if given the chance, a grand wedding event would be the cherry on top for us gamers!
You know, I would love to [do a wedding]. In our minds, Street and Chris are still very much part of the SWAT family.”
Fans were looking forward to witnessing Hondo and Nichelle’s wedding in Season 7 after their engagement at the end of Season 6, but instead, we skipped ahead a few months to find out they had married off-screen. Dettman assured fans, “No, I wouldn’t deny you that moment” for Chris and Street’s relationship progression in future seasons.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m really hoping that even though Season 8 isn’t officially the end for SWAT, it might as well be. Bringing Chris and Street back for a heartwarming wedding episode would be fantastic. Luckily, Dettman has hinted at his desire to have not just them but some other familiar faces return too.
The door is open to all of the characters from the past [to return in some capacity], because I think the audience would love that and we would love that. The door is open for Luca (played by Kenny Johnson until mid-season 7) or Street or Chris to somehow work back into some episodes. I would be thrilled about that.
Fans need to stay patient for a while longer to learn whether we’ll witness their union, but wouldn’t it be delightful if SWAT grants Chris and Street the happily ever after they truly deserve?
