Unexpectedly, Will Smith posted a video on social media, sparking speculation among fans that he might be hinting at the possibility of a Matrix sequel or reboot.
What happens in Will Smith’s video?
In a video posted on Instagram on Monday, a lengthy passage shares the famous anecdote about Smith refusing the lead role of Neo in The Matrix (1997), opting instead for Wild Wild West. The clip then ponders what the movie might have been like if Smith had accepted the part. It then mimics lines from The Matrix, urging Smith to “wake up” and suggesting that the Matrix controls him.

It’s not entirely clear what the video hints at. Fans speculated that it might be a teaser for a revived Matrix series with Smith as the main character. There are reports suggesting a fifth Matrix movie is in the works, and Drew Goddard is being considered for the director role. This potential film would mark the first Matrix production without direct involvement from Lana and Lilly Wachowski, though Lana will serve as an executive producer on the new project.
In a statement, Jesse Ehrman, president of production at Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, shared that Drew arrived with an innovative concept for expanding the Matrix universe. This idea, we believe, has the potential to be extraordinary, as it respects and builds upon the foundation laid by Lana and Lilly Wachowski 25 years ago while also showcasing Drew’s personal passion for the franchise. The entire Warner Bros. Discovery team is excited about Drew creating this new Matrix movie, as they look forward to incorporating his vision into the cinematic legacy that the Wachowskis have developed at our studio over a quarter of a century.
In December 2021, the latest installment in the Matrix series, titled “The Matrix Resurrections,” hit the screens. This movie was directed by Lana Wachowski, who collaborated with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell on the screenplay. The film brought back Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith to reenact their memorable roles as Neo, Trinity, and Niobe. Additionally, Lambert Wilson and Daniel Bernhardt returned to their villainous characters, The Merovingian and Agent Johnson, respectively.
Additionally, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, Telma Hopkins, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, and Brian J. Smith made their debut in the franchise as well.
