Will Smith has addressed his infamous Oscars slap and the fallout from it on his newest album.
What did Will Smith say about his Oscars slap?
Today sees the unveiling of Smith’s newest album, “Based on a True Story.” The first track on this release, entitled “Int. Barbershop – Day,” starts off with longtime Smith collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff and B. Simone voicing their opinion that “Will Smith has been put on hold.
The tune subsequently shifts to a heated debate-like exchange, where Smith and the other musicians seem to be playfully disputing about Smith’s popularity and his celebrity stature, all set against the rhythm of the beat.
Immediately following its debut, the tune subtly alluded to Smith’s controversial incident at the 94th Academy Awards when he slapped Chris Rock. The lyrics seem to debate whether or not Smith was obligated to return his Oscar, which, as it turns out, he was not required to do.
The song says, “It’s reported he’s in a tough situation / It’s said he won an Oscar but was forced to return it / And you may recall, this was likely due to his race.
The tune additionally mentions Smith’s spouse, Jada Pinkett Smith, implying that people often yearn for someone as remarkable by their side and humorously revisiting the incident when Smith responded to Rock after slapping the comedian at the Oscars. “You’d be longing for a Jada Pinkett by your side / Him and Jada both wild – woman, what are you discussing? / Keep her name out of your mouth, you oughta know.
Smith similarly references the event in his song “You Lookin’ for Me?” by mentioning he had to bounce back from that experience. “I’ve had to overcome a lot, but I’m on top again / You’ll need to adjust / My stuff is still burning hot / Even though awards might not be coming my way.
Smith’s album is available to purchase or stream now.
