Will ‘Dog Man’ or ‘Companion’ Rise to the Top of the Weekend Box Office

2025 marks a revival for movie theaters, as Universal’s DreamWorks Animation film “Dog Man” is slated to draw families back into cinemas following the 2024 holiday blockbuster “Mufasa-Wicked”. The opening weekend of “Dog Man” is projected to earn more than $20 million.

The comedy film “Dog Man,” shown in over 3,800 theaters, is an adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s popular Scholastic graphic novel series. With more than 60 million copies sold and translated into 47 languages, this series also includes the beloved “Captain Underpants” books. Previously, a movie based on the “Captain Underpants” brand was produced by 20th Century Fox in 2017, earning $23.8M on its opening weekend and eventually grossing $73.9M domestically. However, Pilkey found himself in a minor controversy, which some called a “white savior” issue online, but this seems to have faded away quickly.

At the moment, “Dog Man” – designed for young audiences – is following in the footsteps of shows like “Paw Patrol”: both “The Mighty Movie” and “DC League of Super Pets” had impressive opening weekends ($22.7M and $23M respectively). Previews for it begin on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Additionally, New Line Cinema’s horror film “Companion,” produced by BoulderLight Pictures, the team behind the small-scale horror sensation “Barbarian,” is also set to premiere in theaters. This R-rated movie with a budget of $10 million was penned and directed by Drew Hancock, known for his work on the TV series “Suburgatory.” With a promotional spend of $29 million, it’s projected to earn between $8 million and $10 million. There’s also potential for higher earnings due to its impressive 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. The previews will begin on Thursday at 3 p.m.
