As a spacefarer, there’s no adrenaline rush quite like embarking on an interstellar treasure hunt. The hazards of the cosmos are numerous – from hostile alien species, lethal automatons, to treacherous traps. But nothing compares to the danger posed by another crew chasing after the same riches. That’s the essence behind Wildhunt, a 4-versus-4-versus-4-versus-4-versus-4 crew-based first-person shooter, developed by Moonshot Games and published by Dreamhaven. Recently, I strapped on my gear and traversed the universe in pursuit of fame and fortune, courtesy of Shacknews.
At the Dreamhaven Showcase held on Tuesday, the game Wildgate introduces players as bold Prospectors, tasking them with an adventure. Players lead their own teams, joining forces to traverse the randomly generated world of Typhon Reach in pursuit of a mysterious artifact called the Artifact. The main objective is to locate the Artifact and safely escort it through the Wildgate, from which crews can launch for their rewards. Although the objective may seem straightforward, there are several stages leading up to victory: planning, exploration, battling challenging environments, and possibly competing against other player-controlled teams.
In Wildgate, you’ll have the option to choose from a limited number of crew members. For this particular playthrough, only two were accessible, but each comes with unique benefits such as faster healing, increased speed, or superior ship repair skills, among others. Collaboration will be crucial throughout the game, especially during its extended sessions lasting between 20-40 minutes.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ll be embarking on an exhilarating journey across the cosmos aboard our spaceship, brimming with essential components like shields, defenses, and more. Throughout the adventure, I’ll need to protect these vital assets from hostile intruders. At the outset of each gameplay session, the location of the coveted Artifact remains a mystery. Utilizing the ship’s advanced scanners, I’ll work with my crew to locate the Artifact, as well as hidden caches of valuable loot that can provide an edge in our quest. Abandoned space stations, moons, and other obscure locales may hold priceless treasures, such as enhanced Prospector weapons and ship upgrades that could significantly boost our defenses, firepower, and maneuverability. In the nail-biting final moments of the game, these enhancements can mean the difference between victory and defeat.
It’s intriguing to note that each location within Wildgate presents unique hazards. These could range from hostile adversaries, hidden traps, or even powerful bosses protecting the riches of each area. Any team members who fall in battle will return to life aboard the ship, but this revival comes at the cost of valuable game time, a resource highly valued in a game where every second counts.
In the end, we manage to find the Artifact, and our objective shifts to transporting it onto our vessel. After securing the Artifact, we’re off to the Wildgate in a high-speed chase. But beware, there are four other player-controlled teams out there, all on the lookout for whoever picks up the Artifact. This is when the game transforms into a Star Trek-like space battle. If a ship is destroyed, its crew is knocked out of the game, so rival teams might combine forces to target the carrier of the Artifact. It’s the pilot’s job to keep things under control, the gunners to respond with counterattacks, and the rest of the crew to fix any damages as they arise. The ship will catch fire during attacks, so repairs need to be done promptly. Also, watch out for hostile players trying to sneak attack aboard our ship.
During each game, the excitement of winning and the fear of a devastating loss intensify, especially as teams carrying the Artifact approach the Wildgate. On one occasion, my team was obliterated just beyond the Wildgate’s vicinity, leaving me to observe the ensuing conflict as a spectator, while the remaining teams battled for control over the now floating Artifact in space.
In a game like Wildgate, it’s clear that communication plays a crucial role. This game seems tailor-made for platforms like Discord, given the necessity for crew members to collaborate during raids across various zones and maintain communication during critical moments. With numerous stages involved, there’s plenty of room for things to go awry, making it a game where you can share lots of laughter over the unexpected twists and turns an Artifact hunt might take.
Wildgate is a complex game with high ambitions, and it remains to be discovered if such an intricate project will resonate with the wider gaming community. Nonetheless, I had a blast playing it, and I’m eager to witness more of its Prospectors in action. For those curious about the game, you can participate in the upcoming community playtest from April 10-14. Wildgate is scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S towards the end of 2025.
