As a dedicated fan who has seen and appreciated countless adaptations of beloved musicals, I cannot help but feel deeply moved by Cynthia Erivo‘s passionate response to the edited Wicked poster. Her words resonate with me, not just as an admirer of her talent, but also as someone who understands the personal investment actors put into their roles.
Cynthia Erivo has voiced concerns over a fan-made poster for the upcoming movie version of the hit Broadway show, “Wicked”, that she finds offensive.
As a gamer, I wasn’t spellbound by the initial poster for the Wicked movie remake that’s intended to mirror the 2003 musical poster. The original design features Elphaba (played by Erivo in the upcoming film), sporting a sly smile and donning bold red lipstick while her eyes are hidden under her hat. In contrast, Glinda is seen whispering in her ear, dressed entirely in white attire.
What did Cynthia Erivo say about the edited Wicked poster?
An edited poster attempting to recreate the original circulated online. Erivo, however, is not happy about it. Through an Instagram story, the actress expressed her disappointment.
“This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen, equal to that awful AI of us fighting, equal to people posing the question, ‘Is your ***** green.’ None of this is funny. None of it is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us,” Erivo wrote.
She went on to say, “The initial post is an ILLUSTRATION. I, however, am a real-life individual who decided to gaze directly into the camera at you, the audience, as our communication often happens through nonverbal cues, particularly our eyes. Our poster serves as a tribute, not a copy. To alter my face and conceal my eyes is to eliminate me, which I find incredibly painful.
Afterward, she added another Instagram post, displaying the genuine movie poster. Her caption read, “Here it is for your reminder and a bit of refreshment.
