As a die-hard musical theater fan who grew up with “Wicked” as one of my all-time favorites, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming Wicked sing-along screenings! After years of longing to see this magical story on the big screen, it’s finally happening, and I’ll be belting out “Defying Gravity” alongside Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in no time.
Audience members should prepare to join in with their beloved tunes, as Variety announces that “Wicked” sing-along performances will be showing in cinemas during the upcoming festive period.
When is the Wicked sing-along screenings release date?
The release date for “The Wicked” sing-along is rumored to be on December 25, 2024, about a month following the movie’s premiere in theaters on November 22, 2024. At this point, specific details regarding theater sing-along screenings haven’t been decided, but Variety suggests that approximately 1,000 North American cinemas will be hosting events for it.
Information about tickets, showtimes, and exact locations have yet to be announced as of yet.
Jon M. Chu, the director of “The Wicked” films, works from a script penned by Winnie Holzman, the author of the musical’s book. The storyline is adapted from Gregory Maguire’s popular novel and the award-winning stage production.
In the movie, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are in the main roles, portraying Galinda Upland and Elphaba Thropp respectively. Other notable actors include Michelle Yeoh playing Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey taking on Fiyero Tigelaar, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Peter Dinklage as Doctor Dillamond, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Ethan Slater as Boq, and several others.
The movie unveils an untold tale about the witches of Oz: Elphaba, a young woman with unique green skin who’s yet to grasp her hidden might, and Glinda, a privileged popular girl who’s still discovering her true compassion. They become friends while studying at Shiz University in the magical realm of Oz. A meeting with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz sets a turning point for their friendship, leading them down separate paths. Glinda’s thirst for popularity leads her to embrace power, whereas Elphaba’s commitment to staying true to herself and others yields surprising and startling effects on her journey. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will eventually lead them to fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
In U.S. cinemas starting from November 22, 2024, you can catch the first part of Wicked. The second part, titled Wicked: Part Two, is planned to hit screens a year later on November 21, 2025.
