Wicked: For Good Director Jon M. Chu Explains Reason for Sequel’s Title

Just last month, the sequel to “Wicked” titled “Wicked: For Good” was officially announced by its director, Jon M. Chu. He feels confident that altering the title to incorporate a line from the script was a wise choice.

At the National Board of Review Awards, Chu remarked, “Who’s interested in a movie titled Wicked: Part Two?” He added, “On the script, it always read ‘For Good,’ and the question was, ‘Should we really label this as Part Two?’ It seemed everyone preferred not to.

In the second act, the song “For Good,” sung by Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande), is one that holds significant importance. As per Chu’s account, “For Good” was the sole contender under consideration for Part Two of the performance.

In other words, that’s our goal,” Chu explained. “We’ve known all along that ‘The End’ is where we’re heading with this film; it’s time to wrap things up.

What is involved with Jon M. Chu in Wicked: For Good?

In other words, “Wicked” is the second installment of the two-film series based on the Tony Award-winning stage musical. Directed by Chu, the sequel was written by Dana Fox and Winnie Holzman. The production will be overseen by Marc Platt and David Stone.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share that along with Erivo and Grande, the stellar cast of Wicked: For Good features Jonathan Bailey essaying Fiyero Tigelaar, Ethan Slater bringing Boq Woodsman to life, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Peter Dinklage lending his voice to Dr. Dillamond, Michelle Yeoh portraying Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum gracing the role of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

In “Wicked: Part Two,” we’ll delve deeper into the tales of the enchanting witches in Oz. Following the dramatic climax of the first part, Galinda has been rechristened as Glinda the Kind, while Elphaba is now infamously known as the Witch of the Wicked West.

Universal’s production of “Wicked” has been an enormous success, with its domestic debut raking in a staggering $112.5 million – the highest opening for a film adapted from a Broadway musical to date. To date, “Wicked” has amassed over $682 million globally, earning substantial profits despite a production budget of just $150 million.

Wicked: For Good opens in theaters on November 21, 2025.
