Wicked Director Originally Wanted to Cast ‘No-Namers’ as Elphaba and Glinda

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in various virtual worlds, I must admit that my initial skepticism about the casting choices for Wicked was palpable. Having grown up with the original Broadway production and its iconic characters, I was hesitant to accept anyone other than the “no-namers” Jon M. Chu originally envisioned. However, after reflecting on the nuances of storytelling and character development in both gaming and theater, I’ve come to appreciate Chu’s change of heart.

Initially, when Jon M. Chu agreed to direct the film version of Wicked, he aimed to cast relatively unknown actors for the main roles of Elphaba and Glinda. He felt that the legendary tale and music would be sufficient to draw audiences to the movie.

In conversation with SFX Magazine through Gamesradar, Chu expressed that he desired a fresh start for “Wicked”, stating, “I wanted to begin anew without any preconceived notions. It’s a standalone piece of work, so we can uncover two unknown characters. I thought, ‘We’ll be searching for the unrecognized.’

During the audition phase, Chu began to shift his perspective. He came to understand that it was crucial to cast gifted actresses who could perform these songs and embody the characters’ feelings effectively. The focus wasn’t merely on finding unknown actresses; it was about discovering the ideal candidates, regardless of their current fame.

As a gamer, I can relate this scenario to my gaming world. Imagine if all these top-notch players wanted to try for the same coveted role in an epic game launch. We screened everyone, and they were all outstanding. Any one of them could have played the part, but there were two who were destined to play this specific character at this very moment. Chu said, “During the selection process, we discovered that the songs are crucial and deeply emotional in this game. The performer has to seamlessly transition between singing and talking, as if it’s effortless, like sliding through levels with grace.” This translates to having a strong skill set in their craft.

Who is involved in Wicked?

ultimately, Chu selected Cynthia Erivo to portray Elphaba Thropp and Ariana Grande to play Galinda Upland. The story of ‘Wicked’ opens with these two characters as students at Shiz University, eventually forming a friendship. Their meeting with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz leads to a rift in their bond, prompting them to follow separate paths that ultimately lead to Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

The cast for Wicked comprises Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle, and Peter Dinklage.

In this version, Chu is responsible for the direction of the play “Wicked,” which is based on a script co-written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox. Originally, “Wicked” was an adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical penned by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz. The production is backed by producers Marc Platt and David Stone.

In theaters starting November 22, 2024, we find the beginning of the two-film adaptation of “Wicked”. The second installment is set to follow on November 21, 2025.
