Jon M. Chu has provided an update regarding the upcoming Britney Spears biopic movie.
In August of 2024, it became public knowledge that Chu had been selected to helm a biographical film centered around Britney Spears. This movie will be adapted from her 2023 memoir titled “The Woman I Am,” which was released by Gallery Books.
Currently, Chu is responsible for directing the musical Wicked featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Additionally, he’s working on the upcoming sequel titled “Wicked: For Good,” set to hit theaters in November 2024.

As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that, according to Entertainment Weekly, Director Chu mentioned that Britney Spears is set to be deeply engaged in the making of the upcoming film!
He mentioned that nothing is fully underway as of now, but she’ll play a significant role in this project. He has ideas, plans, even a strategy, but everything is still in its infancy.
As of now, no official announcements about the actor portraying Spears in the film have been made yet.
In simpler terms, Chu stated, “I look at all fan suggestions for casting roles, as they might have some excellent ideas. However, until we decide on the film’s overall direction, we won’t be able to determine which actor fits best.
Chu expressed to Billboard, “I’ve always been a huge Britney fan, dating back to when we were both young. She was one of 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium. I want to do her justice by telling her story accurately. However, it’s still in development, and there’s a long way to go.” This was shared with Billboard prior to the Golden Globes.
Before directing the Wicked movies, Chu first made his mark as a feature film director in 2008 with Step Up 2: The Streets. Following this, he directed Step Up 3D (2010), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013), Jem and the Holograms (2015), Now You See Me 2 (2016), Crazy Rich Asians (2018), and In the Heights (2021).
A release date for Chu’s Britney Spears biopic has not yet been announced.
