As a seasoned gamer with a knack for collecting movie merchandise, I’ve seen my fair share of oddities, but this Wicked class action lawsuit takes the cake! I remember buying my daughter a Wicked doll, excited for her to join me in our shared love for the film. However, little did we know that the ‘Wicked.com’ link on the box would lead us to an adult entertainment site instead of the movie’s promotional page.
A significant legal dispute, known as a class action lawsuit, is being prepared concerning the erroneous packaging on the early launches of Mattel’s Wicked dolls series. Instead of directing users to the movie’s official site, these packages mistakenly led to an adult content website.
Today, a new lawsuit filed by Holly Ricketson (as reported by Deadline), alleges that she purchased a Wicked doll for her child in California. Subsequently, when the daughter visited the website indicated on the box, ‘Wicked.com’, it led not to the intended promotional site but rather an adult entertainment platform instead.
What is the Wicked class action lawsuit about?
On around November 11th, 2024, I bought a ‘Wicked’ doll for my daughter. When I let her open the box, little did we know that the site shown on Defendant’s packaging would lead us to Wicked.com. To our utter astonishment, instead of being related to the ‘Wicked Doll’, this website bombarded us with pornographic ads on my daughter’s iPhone screen.
As a devoted fan, I’m sharing this: The suit points out that my daughter was exposed to explicit content through the toy, and Mattel didn’t provide refunds for those who had already bought the dolls prior to the labeling issue. The lawsuit aims to recover over $5 million in compensation for those who unknowingly purchased the mislabeled toy.
Although neither Mattel nor Universal have publicly addressed the lawsuit, Mattel did issue a statement recently when news about the problem started spreading online. In their statement, they expressed regret for the mistake and stated that they were taking necessary steps to address it. They also recommended parents to either dispose of any packaging related to the product or cover up the link on the box.
Mattel expressed their sincere apologies for this unwanted mistake and have promptly initiated corrective measures, stated last month. It’s important to notify parents that a site with an unintended mistake is not suitable for kids. Those who already possess the item are advised to either dispose of the packaging or cover the link, and they can reach out to Mattel Customer Service for more details.
The musical “Wicked” is now playing in cinemas and has been a massive hit at the box office, raking in more than $360 million so far and shattering numerous records during its run.
