Are you wondering why The Royals got canceled? This drama series, produced by Mark Schwahn, delves into the struggles of a royal family who are coping with the loss of their heir. Each sibling endeavors to shoulder new responsibilities while dealing with fresh challenges. Simultaneously, the queen fights to preserve her authority. The show ended with Season 4 in 2018, leaving fans eager for more episodes.
However, it’s not going to happen, and here’s why.
Why was The Royals canceled after Season 4?
The TV series “The Royals” ended after its fourth season, following the termination of its creator, Mark Schwahn, due to multiple sexual misconduct accusations. These claims were brought forth not only by those involved in “The Royals,” but also by cast and crew members from his earlier show, “One Tree Hill.
A spokesperson for E! announced to Variety that they will not renew ‘The Royals’ for another season, having been their first original scripted series back in 2015. Over its four seasons, this show offered a peek into the royal family’s scandalous lives filled with unexpected events. We are thankful to the cast and our production partners at Lionsgate and Universal Cable Productions for their hard work.
Approximately three months before the start of Season 4, Lionsgate TV producers announced that Mark Schwahn had been dismissed from his position. In a statement, they said, “Our investigation is complete, and Mark will not be returning to The Royals. Production for season 4 has already finished and it will air as planned on E! this coming spring.” (As reported by The Hollywood Reporter)
Furthermore, prior to Schwahn’s dismissal, a total of 25 cast and crew members associated with The Royals publicly declared their allegations against him. These individuals claimed that he had subjected several women from the cast and crew to “repeated instances of unwanted sexual harassment” (as reported by Variety).
Following his dismissal from The Royals, the accusations grew stronger when cast and crew members from his previous series, One Tree Hill, published a statement that mirrored similar allegations.
