Why Was the Joe Bang Prequel Canceled? Logan Lucky Sequel Fate Explained

As a dedicated fan who has followed Daniel Craig’s career since his early days on the British stage, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at the news that a Logan Lucky prequel might not materialize. Craig’s portrayal of Joe Bang was nothing short of mesmerizing, and the idea of delving deeper into his character’s past was tantalizingly intriguing. The Southern accent, the visual style, the explosive charm – it all came together in a performance that was as explosive as the devices Joe Bang himself crafted.

Since the release of “Logan Lucky” on Netflix, viewers have been discussing the possibility of a prequel featuring Daniel Craig’s character, Joe Bang. Craig’s performance in the 2017 heist comedy was exceptional, displaying his range with a unique Southern accent and aesthetic. The charm of the character and the film’s acclaim make a “Joe Bang”-centered prequel or “Logan Lucky 2” a logical next move.

Here’s what we currently understand regarding the possibility of a Logan Lucky Sequel and if it might hit theaters.

Why was Logan Lucky’s Joe Bang prequel scrapped?

Director Steven Soderbergh, who made the 2017 movie “Logan Lucky”, has shared that plans for a follow-up were abandoned because it didn’t perform well at the cinema.

In an “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit, Soderbergh shared that initial plans for a Logan Lucky sequel focused on the character of Joe Bang, portrayed by Craig. This potential storyline would delve into how Bang landed in prison. However, due to the underwhelming box office success of the first film, there was no follow-up made, with Soderbergh explaining, “The movie didn’t perform well enough for us to consider another installment, so we abandoned the prequel idea.”

Craig’s depiction of Joe Bang in the movie was an outstanding act. As a proficient bomb-maker, Joe Bang played a crucial role in Logan and his team’s heist. Upon freeing him from prison, they enlisted his services to construct the explosive gadget that would allow for their thrilling escape.

In an interview with GQ, Soderbergh told them about his decision to give Craig full creative control over the character. “I simply told him, ‘I don’t mind how you appear or sound, and you’re not obligated to do any press if you prefer not to.’ I know that participating in the Bond promotional tour is more challenging for him than filming the movie,” he explained.

Soderbergh added, “Concepts would trickle in gradually. ‘I’ve got some tattoos. I’ve got a new hairstyle. I’m collaborating with a dialect coach.’ When he arrived, he was prepared and had everything ready.”

Could there be a Logan Lucky sequel after its Netflix success?

It appears that neither Soderbergh nor Craig have provided any recent updates, suggesting it’s doubtful we’ll see a Logan Lucky prequel anytime soon.

Just recently, Netflix added the movie I’ve been eagerly waiting for – it initially hit theaters eight years ago. Now that it’s gaining traction on their platform, there’s a buzz about a prequel! However, the creators haven’t given us any concrete news yet, so it seems like we might have to wait a bit longer before I can see Craig back in his role as Joe Bang again.
