As a fervent admirer of comedy and its power to bring people together, I find myself constantly intrigued by the twists and turns that the industry takes. One such instance that left me utterly bewildered was the sudden dismissal and subsequent return of Shane Gillis from Saturday Night Live (SNL).
There’s been a lot of interest recently about the reason Shane Gillis was let go from SNL. His unexpected termination from the renowned comedy series in 2019, only a few days after being announced as a new cast member, stirred up a great deal of discussion. This event ignited debates on comedy and cancel culture. In essence, what transpired?
Here is more about why Shane Gillis was fired from SNL.
Why did Shane Gillis get fired from SNL?
2019 saw me, Shane Gillis, being let go from Saturday Night Live (SNL) before I even stepped onto the stage for my debut. It all started when some past offensive comments I made resurfaced, causing a massive stir and casting a shadow over my new role as one of the three cast members joining SNL’s 45th season. The attention quickly shifted from my hiring to a series of controversial clips from my podcast, Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast, where I used racially insensitive remarks and derogatory language towards LGBTQ+ comedians, as well as mocking Chinese accents.
Following the public outcry, Saturday Night Live issued a statement regarding the dismissal of Michael Che, explaining his termination stemmed from inappropriate comments he made. The statement also acknowledged SNL’s oversight in their initial vetting process. They expressed that they value diversity and multiple perspectives on their show, but the language Che used was offensive, harmful, and unacceptable. They regret not spotting these problematic clips earlier and apologize for not meeting their usual standards during the hiring process. (paraphrased from NPR)
After being let go, Gillis voiced his opinions on social media. In a candid manner, the humorist conveyed that he comprehended the action taken against him and held it in high regard. Yet, he also advocated that comedians should not be compelled to offer sincere public apologies for their comedy.
In an unexpected turn of events, Shane Gillis made a comeback to SNL in 2024, serving as the host. During his opening monologue, he humorously addressed his past termination by saying, “I was let go from this program some time ago, but I urge you not to research that.” (Source: The Daily Beast)
