HBO decided to cancel Sesame Street due to a new programming strategy.

Since 2016, this series has been airing on HBO. In 2019, a five-year contract was sealed, moving it to both HBO and HBO Max. However, in December 2024, the network chose not to renew its agreement for streaming new episodes on HBO Max.

The sudden change in direction is due to Max wanting to emphasize its content towards adult and family programming. This includes the upcoming Harry Potter series. A representative from Max communicated this transition to The Hollywood Reporter. They expressed, “It’s been a delightful, creative journey collaborating with everyone at Sesame Street on the renowned children’s show. We are pleased to continue offering some of the library series on Max in the U.S. As we’ve launched Max and taking into account consumer preferences and responses, we’ve had to concentrate our efforts on narratives for adults and families.

Max chose not to extend the agreement for fresh episodes, but episodes from the Sesame Street archive will still be accessible until 2027. A representative from Sesame Workshop hinted at unveiling “updated distribution strategies” within the next few months.

2023 saw the CEO of Sesame Workshop reveal their intention to revamp the show for its 56th season. This refresh includes a new structure that combines extended storyline-focused episodes alongside the popular animated series, Tales from 123.
