As a seasoned gamer who has seen more NFL seasons than I care to count, I must say, the decision by the New York Giants to bench Daniel Jones and start Tommy DeVito is a bold move. It’s not often we see such drastic changes mid-season, especially when the team is struggling as the Giants are.
According to reports, Quarterback Daniel Jones has been benched in a bold move by the New York Giants. Although the team has a week off during Week 11 of the 2024 NFL season, as pointed out by ESPN, General Manager Joe Schoen has decided to replace Jones with third-string QB Tommy DeVito, even though Drew Lock is the backup. Here are some possible reasons why Jones was replaced in the middle of the season without an injury.
Why is Daniel Jones being replaced by Tommy DeVito?
Daniel Jones was replaced by DeVito as a precaution against further injury, given his subpar performance throughout the season.
In the current year, Daniel Jones, drafted by the Giants during the 2019 NFL Draft at the age of 27, has faced challenges in 2024 as the team has a dismal 2-8 record in the regular season. His passer rating currently stands at 79.4, which places him among the lowest rankings. Over the past two seasons, Jones’s performance has been subpar, with a win-loss record of 3-13. In the 2023 season, he sustained a neck injury in Week 5 that caused him to miss three games, and after Week 9, he suffered a torn ACL in his right knee.
In the agreement sealed in 2023, Jones remains bound to a four-year contract worth $160 million. This contract contains a clause that guarantees $23 million as compensation if he encounters a severe injury and is unable to play by March of the following year. By keeping him off the field now, we can prevent such an incident.
Regarding Drew Lock not being named starting quarterback, Paul Schwartz from the New York Post notes that his contract doesn’t extend to 2025. On the other hand, DeVito is expected to be an “exclusive rights free agent” in 2025, potentially serving as a backup or even a transitional starter for the team. This move could provide DeVito with additional game experience this season since it seems unlikely that the Giants will make the playoffs this year. Additionally, giving DeVito more playing time serves as a test to determine if he can recapture some of the success he had during a three-game winning streak in 2023.
At present, Jones is in a relationship with Ella Bonafede; however, there were whispers suggesting he may have been involved with Kay Adams as well.
