Why Netflix canceled Altered Carbon before Season 3
According to Deadline’s report, Netflix decided against renewing Altered Carbon for a third season because the viewing numbers didn’t meet the requirements to cover the series’ expensive production costs.
Previously, shows like “The Society” and “I Am Not Ok With This” were at risk of being cancelled on Netflix due to the coronavirus pandemic. While their performance on the platform wasn’t problematic, several factors led to their cancellation. These included uncertain production timelines, rising budgets, and scheduling challenges with a larger cast. Given that these issues couldn’t be addressed during the pandemic, Netflix decided to cancel them as it appeared to be the only option. (Based on The Hollywood Reporter)
Contrary to some assumptions, Altered Carbon Season 3 wasn’t called off because of the pandemic. Instead, the decision was made a month after the release of Season 2. The series didn’t attract enough viewers to meet the required standards, and its high production costs ultimately led to the cancellation of Season 3. (Deadline reported this information.)
In the second season of Altered Carbon, the primary character Takeshi “Tak” Kovacs, who was previously played by Joel Kinnaman, was portrayed instead by Anthony Mackie. This shift occurred because at the end of Season 1, the main character got a new body, necessitating a change in actors, and this time around, it was Mackie stepping into the role.
In Season 2, Takeshi Kovacs, the lone survivor of an elite group of interstellar soldiers, resumes his mission by probing a series of murders. Additionally, he sets out on a quest to rediscover his lost love, Quellcrist Falconer. These two seasons were initially released in 2018 and 2020.
