As the climax of Avengers: Endgame unfolded, Thor decided to ally with the Guardians of the Galaxy, hinting at a forthcoming joint film. However, this possible collaboration made James Gunn, the screenwriter and director of Guardians of the Galaxy films, somewhat apprehensive.
What did James Gunn say about Thor not being in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
During a conversation with EW, Gunn reminisced about that scene in Avengers: Endgame. Rather than many viewers looking forward to the Asgardians of the Galaxy, Gunn decided against having Thor in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, despite his fondness for Chris Hemsworth.
In my script comments, I stated: ‘I won’t include him. I don’t desire Thor in the Guardians. I’m not interested in making a film with Thor.’ Gunn explained, ‘I find the character a bit confusing. I enjoy watching his films and admire Chris Hemsworth as an actor. However, I’m struggling to grasp how to portray that character.’
Although Thor wasn’t present with the Guardians in Gunn’s film, there was a temporary alliance between the Son of Asgard and the motley crew in Thor: Love and Thunder. To start with, Thor worked alongside the Guardians on several missions at the film’s outset. However, their partnership came to an end when Thor got a distress call from Sif.
Chris Hemsworth is set to resume his character as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday, releasing on December 18, 2026. As for the Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s unclear if they will make another appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If any Guardian appears in Doomsday or Secret Wars, it is speculated that Peter Quill might be the one to return.
Speaking about Gunn, he’s moved from his successful career as a writer and director to become co-CEO of DC Studios, partnering with Peter Safran. Currently, he’s engrossed in shaping the DC Universe, akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The initial film in this universe, featuring Superman, is set for release on July 11.
