Are fans speculating that Mission: Impossible 9 will take place after The Final Reckoning? After Tom Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt survived another high-risk mission, many are curious about what’s next for the franchise. Although advertised as a finale, the ending hints that there might still be more to come.
Let’s discuss the latest information regarding a possible ninth movie and the upcoming plans for the Mission: Impossible series.
Why Mission: Impossible 9 possibly won’t happen?
In the movie Mission: Impossible – Fallout, directed by Christopher McQuarrie and co-written by McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen, the storyline culminates with Ethan Hunt triumphing over an artificial intelligence menace called The Entity. Hunt confines it within a five-dimensional gadget, leaving him as the sole individual who can control it. Although Gabriel (Esai Morales) perishes and the world is rescued, Ethan manages to survive and chooses not to retire.
Currently, there hasn’t been an official announcement about Mission: Impossible 9 or any subsequent movies. Tom Cruise shared with Empire Magazine, “I encourage you to watch the film. It’s challenging for me to talk about it right now, as it’s an adventure that needs to be lived.
On the red carpet, he exclaimed, “This is it! The title ‘final’ isn’t just for show.” However, McQuarrie clarified in 2023, “Every project has a plan, but things never go as expected… yet, everything always works out in the end.” (via Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly.)
Simplified Version: Cruise has shown a desire to carry on with the series, stating that he’d like to portray Ethan Hunt as long as viewers are engaged. In The Final Reckoning, Luther leaves Ethan a message saying, “The world still relies on you,” hinting at potential future adventures.
Historically, the franchise follows an unpredictable release pattern, with breaks lasting anywhere from three to five years between new installments. Following the production of Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning, which were filmed consecutively, no further movies in the series have been officially confirmed for release.
The financial success at the box office could significantly impact the final decision. Dead Reckoning generated an impressive revenue of $571 million against its budget of $291 million. On the other hand, The Final Reckoning had production costs exceeding $400M and grossed $190M worldwide, with a record-breaking domestic opening of $77M. To achieve profitability, it probably needs to garner over $1 billion in earnings.
If Tom Cruise agrees, a new movie could be made. In case he doesn’t, Paramount might explore the idea of rebooting or developing spin-offs for the series at some point in the future.
