As a lifelong fan of comic book movies, I must say that “Joker: Folie à Deux” has left me feeling more disillusioned than ever before. After the phenomenal success of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in 2019, I was eagerly anticipating the sequel, especially with Todd Phillips returning as director and Lady Gaga joining as Harley Quinn.
Even though the Joker is accustomed to challenging audiences, the response to “Joker: Madness Duet” surpasses any adversity he’s encountered in Gotham City previously.
Worst comic book movie of all time?
Following the enormous triumph of Joaquin Phoenix’s “Joker” in 2019, fans were incredibly excited when a sequel was announced. This anticipation escalated even more when it was disclosed that Todd Phillips would once again take on the director’s role and Lady Gaga would be cast as Harley Quinn.
Despite a disheartening debut weekend, marked by harsh critiques from both critics and viewers, the upcoming sequel appears to be heading towards becoming one of the most significant flops in the annals of comic book cinema.
On its opening nights, CinemaScore assessed audience reactions to “Folie à Deux,” and it earned a disappointing ‘D’ – the lowest grade ever given to a comic book film. Even “Fantastic Four” from 2015, produced by 20th Century, which was previously at rock bottom with a C-Minus, fared better.
And CinemaScore’s rating was seemingly on the money, with it later getting a mere 33% on Rotten Tomatoes’ infamous Tomatometer.
Why fans hate the sequel
With each new revelation about the film’s production process, it appears that the team of Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, and director Todd Phillips aimed to create a musical. However, their ambition seems to have backfired, resulting in an overindulgent product that didn’t resonate with conventional comic book audience members.
As a gamer, I was excited about the first movie, which stood out from the usual comic book flicks with its deeper, Bohemian touch. I thought they might continue in that vein with the sequel. However, it seems they decided to take a completely different route, and judging by early reviews, this shift appears to have left mainstream audiences cold, even bordering on boredom.
It would have been reasonable to anticipate such an outcome when we started noticing whispers that the film concept originated in Phoenix’s dreams, and he personally presented it to Warner Bros.’ chairman Toby Emmerich. If not, then maybe when the Variety report surfaced, suggesting Phillips as a director acting independently (apparently, Phillips showed no interest in DC during the movie production and declined all communication with James Gunn, who Warner Bros. aims to be their counterpart to MARVEL’s Kevin Feige).
Have you seen “Joker: Folie à Deux”, and is it really that terrible?
