So much so that it sparked the creation of its prequel, titled “Army of Thieves,” which debuted on Netflix in October 2021. Many people are curious about what factors led to Netflix greenlighting this sequel.

Why did Netflix cancel Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead sequels and spin-offs?
While Netflix hasn’t made an official announcement about cancelling Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead sequels and spin-offs, various sources suggest that this might be the case. The possible reason is that Snyder’s recent films, Rebel Moon, didn’t meet expectations in terms of critical reception and box office performance.
In August 2024, The Wrap shared news suggesting that Netflix had canceled their plans to expand Army of the Dead into a franchise. Although Netflix didn’t issue an official statement about it, director Zack Snyder and his co-producer wife Deborah confirmed the cancellation (as reported by What’s on Netflix).
Earlier announcements indicated that the sequel would be titled “Planet of the Dead.” Additionally, an animated series called “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,” which takes place in the same universe, was said to be under development. Furthermore, additional projects beyond the film and animated movie were also planned. However, it appears that all these projects have been temporarily postponed or canceled.
Would Rebel Moon sequels crossover with Army of the Dead universe?
It’s uncertain how well the Rebel Moon movies are doing might influence the upcoming franchise that Zack Snyder is developing. Yet, Snyder has made it clear in several interviews that both Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead take place within the same universe. In an interview with ComicBook.com in April 2024, Snyder also hinted at a character from Rebel Moon that was meant to appear in Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.
“I believe I mentioned this before, but in that movie, one of the characters enters a bar where a character resembling Xanadite appears. If I recall correctly, I haven’t discussed this yet – Xanadite is the blue girl with luminescent markings. She hails from the Army animated series that we didn’t get to complete.”
In the movie, the director explained, “They journey to a planet known as Xanadu, a place that resembles a zombie plague origin. Interestingly, scientists named it Xanadu due to their fondness for Olivia Newton-John. On this planet, there exists a species similar to those causing the zombie outbreak; one of them is our protagonist. The plot involves interdimensional travel, so expect some unusual blends.”
If the Rebel Moon series continues, there’s a possibility that characters from Army of the Dead could make an appearance.
