Online community members are outraged by the couple, Myka and James Stauffer, who relinquished custody of their 4-year-old adopted son, Huxley. Previously known as YouTube creators, they embarked on an international adoption adventure and regularly updated their followers on social media. However, they found that the child needed more than typical care, resulting in him being placed with another family.
Here is all the essential information regarding the couple’s recent choice, a move that has sparked another wave of significant debate among fans.
YouTubers Myka and James Stauffer’s adopted son controversy explained
In 2017, the Stauffer family traveled to China and brought home a charming 2.5-year-old named Huxley. Throughout their experience of international adoption, James and Myka openly documented their journey on social media – from navigating legal procedures to overcoming obstacles together.
In an interview with Parade in 2019, Myka spoke about their decision to adopt Huxley, revealing that James was initially unsure. However, when they saw Huxley, a child with special needs, it touched Myka’s heart and she couldn’t help but decide to bring him into their family. They later learned that he had a brain tumor. Over time, the Stauffers began including Huxley in their regular vlogs, which attracted much attention due to his inclusion.
When Huxley reached four years old, his parents found out that he not only had a brain tumor but also other health complications. As Myka explained, he was believed to have a sensory processing disorder, diagnosed with autism level 3, and had suffered a stroke while still in the womb. It didn’t take long for observant fans of the Stauffers to notice Huxley’s absence from their YouTube videos, which led to growing suspicions among them.
By 2020, Myka and James shared a video on YouTube (which has since been taken down) discussing their child Huxley’s absence, explaining that they hadn’t realized he needed such specialized care. They stated that they had made every effort to give him the best possible care and medical attention. However, receiving advice from numerous medical professionals was challenging for them.
Consequently, the Stauffers chose to place Huxley with another family, whom they trust will provide proper care for him. They mentioned in a video that his new mother has undergone medical training, making her an ideal choice. However, their decision sparked significant criticism online, with some accusing them of abandoning the child.
In the meantime, some people suspected that the couple exploited Huxley to generate income from content. After facing significant backlash due to their choice, the Stauffers withdrew from social media and ceased uploading videos onto YouTube. Furthermore, Myka issued a public apology on Instagram, stating how deeply saddened they were for giving up Huxley. More recently, the Stauffers’ tale has been featured in Max’s documentary series titled “An Update on Our Family.
