As your friendly neighborhood gamer, let me share some behind-the-scenes insights about my alter ego, Kevin Owens. I spilled the beans on my past tussles and troubles with WWE’s previous leadership. In 2022, Triple H took over as Chief Content Officer, replacing Vince McMahon who had to step down from promotion duties due to a scandal surrounding hush money.
In 2023, he briefly rejoined the WWE, but this tenure was short-lived as allegations of sexual misconduct by a former colleague, Janel Grant, surfaced in early 2024. This accusation led to a lawsuit, ultimately leading McMahon to resign from the board, sell his remaining shares, and depart WWE permanently.
After McMahon’s departure, Triple H assumed creative leadership in WWE, implementing significant changes. In the recent years, these alterations have led to a noticeable enhancement in WWE’s content. The audience has witnessed stronger plotlines, higher viewership ratings, and increased spectator attendance. Now, WWE emphasizes long-term story development that links past and current narratives.
During October, Kevin Owens was involved in an intense plotline when he ambushed Cody Rhodes behind the scenes. The WWE skillfully utilized social media to amplify this narrative, with viewers capturing and spreading the incident across various platforms, generating unprecedented excitement that hadn’t been witnessed previously.
Currently, Kevin Owens is part of an engaging narrative, where he’s opened up about past disagreements with WWE’s former management regarding their perception of the fans’ understanding.
Kevin Owens clashed with WWE’s old leadership over fan intelligence
During an interview with Adrian Hernandez of Unlikely, he was asked about how viewers are now being recognized for their commitment to long-term storylines. He replied, “There has definitely been a change in perspective from those in charge, as they acknowledge that our fans are intelligent and attentive, and have excellent memory recall. This is more effective than what was believed by those in charge previously, as it seems they didn’t remember much of what we did. However, the fans do because they care about our work.
He went on to explain, “I’ve had disagreements with those in authority before. ‘Of course, this happened three weeks ago; they’ll recall it.’ They replied, ‘No, they won’t.’ ‘Yes, they will. You’re underestimating their intelligence by suggesting they won’t.’ It’s evident that Triple H doesn’t think in such a way. He recognizes that fans have good memories, and he makes use of this fact. I believe it significantly enhances the product, as far as I’m concerned. When I was a child, around 12, 13, or 14 years old, I watched it all, and I remembered every detail. When The Sultan appeared, I knew it was [Rikishi]. Why is he called The Sultan? Our fans are intelligent. It’s satisfying to see the product embracing this now.
Owen commends WWE’s recent management headed by Triple H for valuing fan input genuinely. At present, he’s embroiled in a rivalry with Randy Orton, and their confrontation is scheduled for WrestleMania 31.
