Some first-time viewers of Max’s popular series, “The Pitt,” are curious as to why it bears
Why is the show named “The Pitt” in the first place?
The series “The Pitt” derives its name from the setting, Pittsburgh, and a clever wordplay, since in numerous medical institutions, the Emergency Room (ER) is often referred to informally among doctors.
As a gamer hailing from Pittsburgh, I might find myself scratching my head over the name of this show since our city isn’t generally known as “The Pitt.” Instead, it goes by nicknames like “Steel City,” “City of Bridges,” or simply “The ‘Burgh” in short form. Interestingly, “The Pitt” is more commonly associated with the University of Pittsburgh, which dates back to 1787 when it was established as the Pittsburgh Academy.
Due to the show’s triumph resulting in a second season, the significance of the nickname has undeniably grown. Inside the series, “The Pitt” is simply an abbreviation for the lengthy Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, a name that’s quite cumbersome.
The title of the play is symbolic, as the ER in the story is often referred to as “the pit” due to its high-stress and turbulent environment. As mentioned in a TIME article from 1973, this nickname carries both favorable and unfavorable interpretations among medical professionals. For some doctors, the heavy workload of the ER can feel like an unjust hardship or a grueling test they must overcome before transitioning to less demanding areas of medicine. However, others view it as a thrilling setting where they get to make critical life-or-death decisions every hour.
