Why Is Rashida Jones Stepping Down as MSNBC President?

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to share some breaking news: I’ve been the president at MSNBC for quite a while now, but it’s time for me to step down and pass on the controller, so to speak. This decision was made four years ago, back in early 2021, and it’s got folks talking all over the web. The question everyone seems to be asking is: why am I leaving? And more importantly, who will be my replacement?

Just a few days before this announcement, we heard that Donald Trump is making his way back to the White House as US President. So, it’s an interesting time, to say the least!

Here is all we have uncovered on Rashida Jones’ MSNBC resignation.

Rashida Jones to seek ‘new opportunities’ as she steps down as MSNBC President

In a memo shared with MSNBC employees on Tuesday, Rashida Jones announced her decision to leave the network as she pursues fresh ventures.

In a memo during the holidays, Jones expressed that they arrived at this decision while reminiscing on our incredible journey and the numerous victories we’ve shared as a team. He stated that this phase of his career has been incredibly fulfilling for him, and he takes immense pride in what we’ve achieved, which wouldn’t have been possible without your contribution. As a dedicated admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Rebecca Kutler, who transitioned from CNN after 20 years of service, has been chosen for the temporary presidency role at MSNBC in 2022.

MSNBC is experiencing a rocky period as Jones leaves, due to several factors. First, the network has been battling reduced viewership since Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election. Second, it’s dealing with Comcast’s plans to separate MSNBC, along with CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, Golf Channel, and SYFY, into an independent publicly traded company.

Since Rashida Jones took over as MSNBC’s president in 2021, she has made significant strides. These accomplishments encompass boosting the network’s viewership to unprecedented levels, launching a live-event series, and attracting high-profile figures like former White House press secretary Jen Psaki.
