As a longtime fan of K-pop, I’ve seen my fair share of drama and turmoil within the industry. But the recent developments surrounding NewJeans have left me truly disheartened. Having followed their rise to fame and admired their unique sound and charm, it’s heartbreaking to see them struggle in this manner.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve got some exciting news to share from the gaming world of K-pop fandom. My favorite girl group, the phenomenal NewJeans, recently gathered for an urgent press conference to announce that they’re taking a new path. They shared that they’ll be leaving their current agency, ADOR, which is a sub-label under the massive HYBE.
NewJeans Announces Exit From ADOR
The five members of NewJeans – Hanni, Minji, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein – recently held an emergency press meeting to announce their decision to part ways with ADOR. This step was taken after a two-week deadline during which they presented a series of requests to the agency.
After 14 days with no resolution in sight, the group spoke to the media, expressing their concern that HYBE and the current ADOR have shown no intention of implementing changes or addressing their demands.
The team clearly articulated their reasons for departing ADOR: “The situation is clear – NewJeans is one of our artists, and ADOR must safeguard her. This is a fundamental duty that any agency should fulfill. However, we believe that ADOR lacks the motivation or resources to ensure NewJeans’ well-being. Remaining here would be futile, and our mental strain would persist. In essence, there seems to be no benefit for us professionally, so the five of us feel it is unnecessary for us to stay with ADOR.” (via Soompi)
Danielle disclosed that the team plans to carry out their actions unrestricted, having no limitations imposed by ADOR.
This action is a response to accusations made against HYBE regarding inappropriate treatment and harassment. In October, Hanni spoke before the South Korean National Assembly, stating that she was disregarded by high-ranking officials at HYBE. Furthermore, she alleged that HYBE staff had disparaged NewJeans on a public discussion platform called Blind.
As reported by Billboard, this recent turn of events seems to stem from a long-standing disagreement between Min Hee-Jin and HYBE. Min Hee-Jin had accused HYBE of copying NewJeans’ concept with their debut of another girl group, Illit. In response, HYBE claimed that Min was trying to seize full control of the company, leading them to conduct an audit on ADOR, a move allegedly made by HYBE.
By August 2024, Min Hee-Jin had stepped down from her position as CEO at ADOR. The subsequent month, NewJeans shared a video (later removed) calling for Min’s return and alleging a harmful work environment at HYBE, their parent company.
