In a recent disclosure, producer Zoie Nagelhout explained the reason behind Dominique Thorne’s character not donning her iconic pink suit in the Marvel series “Ironheart.” The mini-series premiered on Disney+ on June 24, 2025.
In addition to Thorne playing Riri Williams, the series includes Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, and others. Notably, Sacha Baron Cohen appeared as the highly expected Marvel character Mephisto in a special role within the show.
Zoie Nagelhout on why Ironheart didn’t get her pink suit from comics
In a chat with The Direct, Ironheart’s producer, Zoie Nagelhout, explained why they decided to leave out Riri Williams’ iconic pink suit in the series.
As a gamer, when someone asked if I thought about including Williams’ iconic pink suit in the miniseries, I was completely honest and said, “Nah, not really.” The reason being, when we looked back at some of the earlier comics, we found this incredible, gunmetal gray, almost Transformers-like suit that Mike Deodato designed for her. She built it in her dorm room at MIT, and as soon as we saw it, we knew that was the perfect fit for our version of the character.
Nagelhout further explained that viewers could anticipate seeing the “pink suit in the future.” She added, “You might imagine that Tony constructed it using nanotechnology.” For Williams’ standalone series, they intended for the character to initially wear a suit that fans would recognize as having distinct origins. The producer elaborated, “We wanted to depict that the suit originated from this junkyard or this car part. That was where we decided to start her.
In her battle against Anthony Ramos’ character called Hood, Williams designed an entirely new suit by repurposing pieces from her stepfather’s automobile. This unique suit was crafted in her stepfather’s garage, featuring a combination of black and red hues. Moreover, the suit incorporated magical elements as well.
In June of 2025, the initial three episodes of Ironheart were made available, followed by the remaining three episodes on July 1st.
