Why & How Many Times Was Futurama Canceled?

As a hardcore Futurama fan who’s been through the rollercoaster of its multiple cancelations and renewals since 1999, I can’t help but feel like I’m dating a temperamental ex-girlfriend. Just when I think we’re done for good, she surprises me with another comeback!

From its debut in 1999, the animated series Futurama has experienced numerous cancellations followed by revivals, leaving longtime fans bewildered. Now, newcomers to the show are questioning how many times Futurama was canceled and if it’s still active. As of now, Futurama is in its twelfth season (ninth in production order), focusing on the developing romance between Fry and Leela while exploring Bender’s past through a revisit to his ancestral robot village.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve often wondered, “Why did Futurama get axed numerous times? Is it still alive and kicking?” Here’s a rundown of the rocky on-off history of this beloved animated series.

Why was Futurama canceled multiple times?

Futurama’s first cancelation after four seasons was due to Fox’s lack of support for the show.

In an interview with the Calgary Sun, creator Matt Groening expressed his displeasure towards Fox, stating they were acting irrationally. Furthermore, he shared that Fox felt constrained due to their limited creative control over the series, including The Simpsons, according to Chortle.

Additionally, Fox regularly changed the schedule of the show, moving it between different days and times. Initially, it was on Sunday night, but then it moved to Tuesday night. After that, it returned to an 8:30 PM slot on Sunday, only to be shifted back again to 7:00 PM on Tuesday. (via paraphrased by me)

As a dedicated fan, I’ve always been intrigued by the ongoing creative tussle between Groening and Fox regarding the path of Futurama since its inception. In a candid interview with Mother Nature, the mastermind behind Futurama voiced his displeasure towards Fox’s actions, labeling them as “temperamental,” and indirectly criticizing Hollywood for similar behavior. He also shed light on Fox’s inclination to meddle with projects, often leading to their downfall rather than empowering creators to flourish and achieve success. Interestingly, he also disclosed that Fox executives were not fond of The Simpsons, providing a fascinating insight into this long-standing relationship.

In 2008, Comedy Central started producing the fifth, sixth, and seventh seasons of the series. Unfortunately, they chose not to renew it after the last episode of Season 7 aired in 2013. No specific reason for this cancellation has been given, but low viewership numbers might have played a role in this decision.

Is Futurama still running?

As a dedicated fan, I can’t hide my excitement that Futurama is still going strong! Right now, we’re deep into the 12th season (broadcast-wise) or the 9th season (in terms of production). Can’t wait to see where this intergalactic adventure takes us next!

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the series has been extended with another two seasons. Following the annual release schedule since Futurama’s Season 11, which premiered in 2023, this means we can expect the show to continue until the year 2026.

Matt Groening was the brain behind Futurama’s creation. The talented ensemble of voice actors includes Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, David Herman, and Frank Welker.
