Why Has Breakdancing Been Removed From LA Olympics 2028?

As a seasoned sports enthusiast and a passionate breakdancer who has spent countless hours perfecting my moves on the dance floor, I must say I am genuinely saddened by the news that breakdancing will not be part of the LA 2028 Olympics. I was looking forward to seeing my favorite sport take center stage alongside other esteemed Olympic disciplines.

Breakdancing, or “Breaking” as it’s known in the Olympics, will not feature in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. After its first appearance at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and its planned debut at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games, this news has left many breakdancing enthusiasts feeling let down.

Let’s take a look at why breakdancing did not make the list of events for the 2028 LA Olympics.

Why is Breakdancing not a part of LA Olympics 2028?

It’s highly probable that breakdancing won’t be featured in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics because there are only a few sports that can be incorporated.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to admit that Breakdancing has a passionate fanbase, but it’s fair to say its popularity doesn’t quite match up with more established sports like those in the Olympic arena. However, its debut at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, where it garnered a substantial audience, might be one of the reasons for its inclusion in future events. Indeed, it made its way into the 2024 Paris Olympics. In Paris, the B-girls event saw Japan take home the gold, while Canada triumphed in the B-boys event.

Unfortunately, breakdancing won’t participate in the LA Olympics of 2028 due to fierce competition among sports for a spot in the Olympic program. The decision to omit it from the 2028 Games was made prior to the commencement of the 2024 Paris Olympics. (paraphrased from NBC New York)

Despite this potential hurdle for the sport, the community is determined to qualify for future Olympic Games. Australian B-girl Raygun expressed her disappointment about breaking not being included in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, stating, “It’s disheartening that we were excluded before even getting a chance to demonstrate our skills.” (paraphrased from Fox Sports)

2028’s LA Olympics will bring back cricket, baseball, softball, and lacrosse to the games for the first time since 1900. New sports like flag football and squash will make their debut as well. Notably, cricket will be making a comeback after an absence of 128 years; its last appearance in the Olympics was in 1900. In the 2028 games, cricket will return to Los Angeles in its modern Twenty-20 format.
