As a long-time Naruto fan who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of ninja battles and epic storylines, it’s hard not to feel a pang of concern when hearing about potential delays or cancellations for the live-action movie adaptation. With Destin Daniel Cretton now being courted by Marvel and Sony Pictures for Spider-Man 4, I can’t help but wonder if Naruto will ever see the light of day.
There’s speculation among fans that the upcoming Naruto Live-Action film may face postponement or cancellation, as director Destin Daniel Cretton is reportedly in negotiations for a new project within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), specifically Spider-Man 4. This development has left some wondering about the status of Naruto’s live-action adaptation. As of now, neither a release date nor any official announcement about cancellation has been made. Here’s what we know so far.
Is the Naruto live-action movie canceled or delayed?
Naruto’s live-action adaptation is neither canceled nor delayed.
2015 saw the initial announcement for Naruto’s live-action adaptation, and finally, this year, fans have received some substantial news about it. In February 2024, it was reported that the project was under development, with Destin Daniel Cretton directing and Tasha Huo handling the screenplay. Now, in August, Huo confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that she had completed the script’s draft. She mentioned that following Cretton’s final edits, the film is expected to enter production.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been announced that director Ryan Coogler is also working on Marvel and Sony Pictures’ fourth Spider-Man film. Tom Holland reprises his role as the superhero in this movie, which is set to hit theaters in July 2026. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are penning the script, with Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal from Sony serving as producers. Given Cretton’s involvement in this upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe project and his busy schedule, there may be a delay or even cancellation of the planned Naruto movie. However, fans will have to wait for an official update from the creators on any changes to its release date.
When will the Naruto live-action movie come out now?
At the time of writing, Naruto’s live-action release date remains undisclosed.
It’s likely that the anime adaptation may face a delay, as Spider-Man 4 is scheduled for 2026. If Cretton directs, it might not premiere in cinemas until after Spider-Man 4 is released. But if Lionsgate plans an earlier release, they might bring on another director instead.
