Despite having few dialogue lines and an distinctive appearance, this character is widely recognized among League of Legends players. Yet, he is seldom chosen as a jungler in the game. In this article, we will explore why Rammus is often overlooked on Summoner’s Rift.
One Dimensional Playstyle
Rammus, unlike many other tanks in League of Legends, moves swiftly. Using his Q, Powerball, he dashes between lanes in search of solitary opponents to eliminate.
With just a few essentials such as Thornmail, you’ll pack quite a punch. Rammus’ unique trait, Spiked Shell, causes his basic attacks to deal extra magic damage based on his armor amount. When he activates his W, Defensive Ball Curl, this benefit is amplified by 50%. This effect also applies to enemies striking Rammus with their basic attacks.

The outcome? Your adversaries suffer greater harm than they inflict. In other words, Rammus will scare off any fragile ADCs due to his increased damage output. However, his abilities are quite limited and you’ll find yourself repeating the same strategies with little room for creativity.
Rammus is Easy to Counter
Although Rammus is among the quickest champions in the game, it doesn’t make him invincible. With just one champion able to disrupt his charge, Rammus will find himself abruptly halted on the Summoner’s Rift, leaving no trace of his advancement.
Before update 7.10, Rammus would roll up in a ball during Powerball mode. However, Riot made some adjustments to Rammus in Season 7, transforming his Q into a channeled ability. As a result, any action that interrupts channeling will prevent Rammus from enjoying himself.
With the updates in patch 7.10, you don’t necessarily require the ability to manage large crowds to halt Rammus from charging towards you. Instead, Rammus can be effectively checked by skills similar to Viktor’s Chaos Storm. In simpler terms, controlling Rammus is not a complex task.
Rammus’ Dependence on Armor
As a gamer, I can tell you that when I play Rammus, my armor numbers become significantly stronger due to his unique abilities. Unlike many other tank champions, Rammus’ damage output is directly linked to the amount of armor he has. So, the more armor I build on him, the more damage he deals. This sets him apart from other tank carries who don’t have such a close relationship between their armor and damage.
Relying heavily on armor leaves him particularly vulnerable to items and skills that weaken or destroy it. Consequently, he may become completely irrelevant in the game due to the impact of such counters as Black Cleaver or Jarvan IV’s Q against Rammus.
As a devoted fan of League of Legends, I’d like to share an effective strategy with you when it comes to using Rammus as a champion. Instead of casting your Defensive Ball Curl before enemies activate their armor shredding abilities, try holding off until after they have done so. If you don’t, you’ll find yourself in a precarious situation where Rammus is left with no armor and minimal damage potential. In essence, Rammus becomes an insignificant character on the battlefield – even minions would outshine him in terms of stats at that point.
Fluctuating Damage
As someone who has spent countless hours playing League of Legends and experimenting with various champions, I can attest to the fact that Rammus is not a popular pick due to his inconsistent damage output. His unique playstyle revolves around building armor items, which makes him highly effective against teams with a lot of physical damage. However, this comes at a cost – if he decides to build health items instead for survivability, his damage potential significantly decreases. Based on my personal experience and observation of the meta, Rammus is often overlooked because of this unreliable damage trait.
In simpler terms, Rammus needs to rely heavily on certain items to inflict significant damage, yet he can’t prepare for specific enemy builds like Kraken Slayer from Jinx. As a result, even if you aim to be a robust tank, Rammus may struggle consistently dealing damage due to the ease with which opponents can neutralize him.
Rammus, the quirky and unique tank champion, stands out from the crowd but is not commonly chosen due to his situational nature. Despite Riot attempting to address some concerns with a minor update last year, Rammus’ popularity hasn’t significantly increased.
