As a long-time admirer of Morgan Freeman‘s exceptional acting talents, I’ve always been in awe of his resilience and strength, both on and off the screen. The 2023 Oscars left me intrigued when I noticed him wearing gloves on one hand during his appearance with Margot Robbie. Little did I know that this was a testament to an incredible chapter in his life.
Many viewers have frequently remarked on Morgan Freeman always donning a glove on his left hand during award ceremonies. This detail sparked much conversation among fans when they spotted it at the 2023 Oscars. In truth, the actor sustained a significant injury in the past, necessitating him to use the protective accessory. Therefore, let’s delve into Morgan Freeman’s history and understand how these gloves assist him.
Here are the details.
What happened to Morgan Freeman’s hand?
At the 95th Academy Awards last year, Freeman’s unique arm accessory drew attention when he made a surprising appearance, accompanied by Margot Robbie. The pair were honoring Warner Bros’ century in the entertainment industry. Many noticed that Freeman wore a black glove on just one hand, which matched his suit and created interest regarding his hand-related injury.
In 2008, Freeman sustained a severe hand injury following a car accident that occurred off the rural roads of Mississippi, close to his home in Charleston. Reports suggest he was driving and unfortunately collided with something, causing his vehicle to flip several times, inflicting serious wounds.
Clay McFerrin, editor of the Charleston Sun Sentinel newspaper, observed on-site and saw hydraulic cutters being employed to extract him from his vehicle. At that moment, it was said he was awake and even joked with the paramedics, as reported by The Guardian.
Due to the critical state of his health and the lack of appropriate treatment at a nearby facility, he was helicoptered to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis. He experienced fractures in his arm, elbow, and some damage to his shoulder. A minor surgical procedure was performed to address his injuries.
After this occurrence, doctors advised Freeman to use compression gloves which aid in uninterrupted blood circulation and prevent pooling on his hand. In a 2010 interview with People, Freeman admitted that despite undergoing surgery, his left hand has limited mobility due to nerve damage. He explained, “The damage hasn’t improved; I can’t move it” (as reported by the New York Post).
